Albania

(SHQIPRIA)

Albanians descend from Illyrians who occupied the West Balkan peninsula c. 1000 BC. King Argon and, after him, his wife Teuta, conquered many territories, provoking the military might of Rome. Despite Roman occupation and invasions by Visigoths, Slavs and Huns, the Albanians were one of the few peoples to retain their Illyrian language and customs. Turkish invasions began in the 14th century. Independence followed the end of Turkish rule in 1912 when General Ferreo, in command of Italian troops declared Albania an independent country. Italian forces occupied the country from 1914 to 1920.

A constitution was adopted and Albanian became a republic in 1925. In 1928 a constitutional amendment made the country a monarchy under King Zog I.

In March of 1939, Italy invaded Albania (King Zogu fled the country, but did not abicate his throne). Germany occupied Albania from September 1943 until late 1944 when it became an independent state headed by Enver Hoxha. The People's Socialist Republic was instituted in 1976 and was renamed Republic of Albania in 1991. Postage stamps have been issued since 1913.
