PONEY'S POSTE France- Paris: local post (an 'urgent delivery service') listed in James MacKay's 1971 International Encyclopaedia of Stamps in which "letters were collected by tobacconists and taken in pony carts to Railway stations.." [rs; comm. links]. Stirling reports, "My old friend, August Bourdi, ... listed four colours of this item, and the other design with a horse's head in a star (see image lower right & on lefthand link) in his Les Timbres de Fantaisie ... It is correct that the service ran from tobacconists' kiosks and newsagents' shops. It covered the whole of Paris. ..and (the one to the upper right) ..is known genuinely used on a cover from Gare du Nord, Paris to the United Kingdom on 12 May 1893."
