The Post and Telecommunications Museum Foundation was founded in 1995 in the wake of the German Postal Reform. The historical roots of the Foundation and its institutions date back to the 19th century and the founding of the Reich Postal Museum in Berlin. Later, other postal and telecommunications museums were added; today maintains the Museum Foundation to the Museum for Communication Berlin, the Museum for Communication Frankfurt and the Museum for Communication Nuremberg, as well as the collections and archives for Philately in Bonn.

Purpose of Post and Telecommunications Museum Foundation is the collection, preservation, processing and distributing the entire development of transmission in the postal and telecommunications sectors.

      Öffnungszeiten:

      Mittwoch, Donnerstag 9 – 17 Uhr

The Museum for Communication Berlin was founded in 1872 as the world's first postal museum. Germany's then Postmaster General Heinrich von Stephan had a magnificent showcase building constructed between 1893 and 1898 on Leipziger Strasse at the corner of Mauerstrasse to house the museum. Since the museum was first opened, it has had a chequered history. It was closed during the Second World War and badly damaged in bombing raids in 1944 and 45. In 1958, the museum was reopened as the East German Postal Museum in temporarily refurbished rooms. In 1966, West Berlin founded the Berlin Post and Telecommunications Museum near Wittenbergplatz. The East Berlin museum was closed on a number of occasions during a series of construction phases, carefully renovating it to meet modern conservation standards. The museum was finally reopened on 17 March 2000 as the Museum for Communication Berlin.

The collection's most precious gems include the world's most famous stamps – the Blue and Red Mauritius, on show in the museum's treasure chamber. (children are said to be free - aj. c.2014)

It '' forms together with the DB Museum, the Transport Museum in Nuremberg. 2010, the permanent exhibition has been completely redesigned. The focus is on the communication of people - from the first cry about language, writing, facial expressions and gestures to the use of the Internet. Organization and architecture of the exhibition follow the channels of communication: There is a space of sounds, images and font as well as a fourth area of communication on the Internet. A television studio, a pneumatic tube system, a writing workshop and many other interactive stations allow their own discovery and learning.'' (ref.)

      Rare and Special

In addition to the general collection, the Archives has an extensive collection of complete sheets of stamps, a large postal stationery collection as well as a variety of thematic collections, most of which were purchased by individuals or arrived as a gift of dedicated collectors. A special feature is the collection of original stamp designs from renowned graphic designers and artists. Rounding out the inventory of the archives is a small working library.
