The highlight for many is the occasion at which both the Congress Medal is presented, and the new signatories to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists are invited to sign the Roll. More often than not, this is linked with a reception hosted by the town or city in which the Congress is held."

The Society was reorganized as an Association of Societies thus forming the North of England Philatelic Association at a special meeting in 1944. The Association is still an Association of Societies with a regular Convention hosted by one [or more] its member societies."

Declining membership numbers at local level is a cause for great concern and there seems to be few new members taking up the hobby. But let’s end this potted history on a positive note – NEPA has been through bigger dips in its membership that this in the past, and has gone on to become stronger. As long as there are philatelists in the North East, NEPA will be there to serve their needs." - NEPA website c.2008, ajw.

Yorkshire Philatelic Association (YPA) ABPSContact: Mr Phill Harriman, [email protected] Show: Leeds (known June 2007): phone: 01904-701464 Article: Distinguished Yorkshire Philatelists "Founded in 1947 in Leeds, there were ten societies, but the Association has grown over the years to its present twenty-four." They offer a wonderful 'Ask the Sage" service to members for such questions as:Question: When were post codes introduced in the United Kingdom?
The Sage says: In 1857 and 1858 London was divided into ten postal districts, the forerunners of modern postcodes. These were EC (the City), WC (the West End), and eight outer districts of N, NW, NE, S, SW, SE, W and E. The first modern postcodes were announced by the Postmaster General on 28 July 1959 for Norwich. By October of that year some 150,000 private and business addresses in Norwich had been allocated postcodes. The remainder of the United Kindom was allocated postcodes over the next 15 years until the whole of the country was postcoded by 1974.and:
Question: I'm confused with all these countries that keep changing their names - have you got a list of their old and new names?
The Sage says: The following list may help. If any reader knows of any I've missed perhaps he or she would kindly email details to me and I will add them to the list.Aden changed its name to South Arabian Federation in 1965 Basutoland has been Lesotho since 1966 Bechuanaland changed to Botswana in 1966 British East Africa became Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika in 1903 (See also under Tanganyika below) British Guiana became Guyana in 1966 British Honduras has been called Belize since 1973 Burma has been Myanmar since 1991 Cambodia became Kampuchea in 1980 Ceylon has been called Sri Lanka since 1972 Congo became Zaire in 1971 Ellice Islands have been Tuvalu since 1976 Gilbert Islands changed to Kiribati in 1979 Gold Coast has been known as Ghana since 1957 New Hebrides became Vanuatu in 1980 North Borneo has been Sabah since 1964 Nyasaland changed to Malawi in 1964 Persia has been called Iran since 1935 Rhodesia (Northern) has been known as Zambia since 1964 Rhodesia (Southern) has been Zimbabwe since 1978 Part of Ruanda-Urundi became Burundi in 1962 Siam was renamed Thailand in 1949 South West Africa became Namibia in 1990 Tanganyika and Zanzibar combined to become Tanzania in 1965 Upper Volta became Burkina Faso in 1984

- "... Friendly relationships had been established during 1998 between the AAP, who had continued to hold monthly meetings in London, and the ASCGB. The passage of time and the departure of some older members (along with the happenstance that Dr John Beech was Hon Secretary of both societies) made it possible to address the oddity of there being two Societies in Great Britain with basically identical objectives. After lengthy discussions, the final negotiations being held in Baden bei Wien during WIPA 2000, the re-united Austrian Philatelic Society was created."

Civil Censorship Study Group (CCSG) Chris Miller (deceased c.2008) 161 Upper Woodcoto Road, Caversham, Reading, Berkshire RG4 7JR In USA: Chuck J. LaBlonde, @AOL 15091 Ridgefield Lane, Colorado Springs, CO 80921, U.S.A.
- The CCSG caters specifically for collectors with an interest in Civil Censored mail. Specialist collectors of one or more countries or areas who have an interest in censored mail originating in or passing through that country/region will find membership rewarding. Also covered are general collectors of censored mail, often with a military interest.
- When the Civil Censorship Study Group was set up the intention was to fill the gap in the coverage by existing U.K. societies. At that time, the thriving Forces Postal History Society (FPHS), dealt with military mail, forces postmarks and to some extent POW and Internee mail. The "U.S. War Cover Club" (WCC), now "Military Postal History Society (MPHS)", as well as the "Boer War Society" were flourishing too. The German "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Zensurpost" ('translates 'Association of censorship Post') covered both military and civil mail, although the main emphasis of the WCC was on military mail and we exchange information with them.
- In the USA, Dann Mayo and Bill Broderick were already active collectors of civil censored material. To reduce costs they set up a branch of the CCSG for the Americas.
- The CCSG was therefore intended to complement the FPHS and to collect information on the censorship of CIVIL MAIL. Civil mail is mail on which the postage has been paid; most "forces mail" in World War II went post free, although adhesives had to be added for airmail carriage. However, there are many items of mail of forces origin which have military censorship; which then went into the civil mail system: which were pulled out for censorship along with the ordinary civil mail, so that they collected the same handstamps and re-sealing tapes as did civil mail. The C.C.S.G. is APS, American Philatelic Society, Affiliate No. 86, also members of ABPS.
- Founded in 1972, membership is at about 200 c.2008.

- The Exhibition Study Group consists of 100+ people who have a wide range of interest from the 1851 Great Exhibition onwards, from the stamps and special postmarks used throughout this period, to advertising stickers, commemorative plates and other crested china ware, medals, post cards, printed ephemera, books, etc. British Exhibitions, including and Philatelic Congress and Exhibitions, attract most attention, but a few members are interested in Foreign Exhibitions. It is truly a vast collecting field, with common items costing a few pence, to rare pieces well into four figures.

"The BCPSG was formed in early 1961 by seven enthusiastic collectors, under the name "British West Indies Federation Study Group." The dissolution of the Federation itself a few months later and the broadening of the Group's membership and scope (due, among other factors, to a merger with the Bahamas Postal History Study Circle) led the Group to change its name to "British Caribbean Philatelic Study Group" in 1962. In 1988, members of the U.K.-based Roses Caribbean Philatelic Society voted to merge with the BCPSG.
The Wreck & Crash Mail Society was formed in the latter part of 1994, and is devoted to the collecting and study of all aspects of delayed and/or damaged mail and interrupted mail services.
Currently the Society is composed of four study groups, namely:
