Q: "Communications are changing, and New Zealand seems to be leading the way in deregulating postal services. What prompted NZ to deregulate or commercialize the Post Office? " .. (and what's the effect on collectors?) . A: ...first ... by turning the New Zealand Post Office into New Zealand Post, a "state owned enterprise" (SOE) ... the company operates as an autonomous corporation whose major shareholder is the New Zealand Government ... New Zealand Post presently markets its techniques world-wide to other countries... (With) the entry of niche-competitors developing services ... New Zealand. Stamp collectors .. have the option of collecting New Zealand Post stamp issues and Postal History as well as the stamps, labels, imprints and all other postal material (of these new) "postal operators. . And regarding NZ's Dependencies, "..Postal deregulation is expected to allow postal operators to produce their own stamps with "New Zealand" on them. This is due to take place in about four years and would presumably need UPU approval." ( document undated except to say it's CP's '51st year' ; founded 1949; therefore: 1999?) . Q: Good or Bad?, A: The flip side of commercialisation is that New Zealand Post tends to issue more stamps than seems appropriate for a small country. ... (and later notes:) ..is that it is a small country which logically has not issued and used as many stamps over time as larger countries and therefore remains highly collectible. The Post Office in New Zealand has traditionally been a responsible stamp issuing authority and has "played by the book" without indulging in undue exploitation of the market. Although New Zealand Post makes, in some people�s opinions, "too many issues" these factors still largely apply to New Zealand stamps. --------------------------------------------------- AJ's bottom line (concuring with the interviewee: NZ is a small country and has tended, especially in the past, to issue a LOWER number of issues and, with a world market open via the 'net, represents a good investment area.
