  • "The word “philately” is the English version of the French word "philatélie", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Herpin stated that stamps had been collected and studied for the previous six or seven years and a better name was required for the new hobby than timbromanie, which was disliked. He took the Greek root word 'phil' or 'philo', meaning an attraction or affinity for something, and ateleia, meaning "exempt from duties and taxes" to form "philatelie". The introduction of postage stamps meant that the receipt of letters was now free of charge, whereas before stamps it was normal for postal charges to be paid by the recipient of a letter.

The alternative terms "timbromania", "timbrophily" and "timbrology" gradually fell out of use as philately gained acceptance during the 1860s.

    ...

Collecting stamps is also an excellent hobby for the younger generation. Children very often inherit stamp collections from grandparents or other members of the family and do not know what to do with it. NamPost Philately is currently busy with a programme whereby schoolchildren are educated in managing their stamp collections. The general idea is to encourage them to collect and to enjoy the hobby!

    ...

It is recognised that stamps are economical and effective ambassadors for the country of origin, that their design is part of national heritage, that stamps play an important role in the education of the young, and that mutual recognition of national symbols through philately can lead to a greater cultural understanding amongst nations."

Officially the Republic of Nauru and formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island country in Micronesia in the South Pacific.

Settled by Micronesian and Polynesian people..at least 3,000 years ago, Nauru was annexed and claimed as a colony by the German Empire in the late 19th century. After World War I, Nauru became a League of Nations mandate administered by Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. During World War II, Nauru was occupied by Japanese troops, who were bypassed by the Allied advance across the Pacific. After the war ended, the country entered into trusteeship again. Nauru gained its independence in 1968. . . .

In 2008, Nauru recognised Kosovo as an independent country, and in 2009 Nauru became the fourth country, after Russia, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, to recognise Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia.

  • Nepal Post is considered as one of the oldest governmental service organizations in the country, which started postal services formally through the post offices for the first time in 1878 AD . . . It was called Nepal Hulak Ghar (General Post Office) . . . It was started from Kathmandu for dealing with letters . . . After three years, Nepal Hulak Ghar had expanded to 43 post offices in different parts of the country.

    . . .

As the post has had the crucial role in uniting the family, friendship and diversity of the country together, it was the only reliable and dependable means of communications and was deep rooted in Nepalese society until 1950 A.D.

After the termination of Rana regime, with the dawn of democracy in 1951, successive efforts were made for the expansion and development of postal services. By that time, there were 124 post offices in operation. Following the emergence of democratic polity in 1951 this sector deserved greater priority for its development and expansion, and this resulted into fabulous increment having 3,997 post offices altogether. . .

Today, Postal Services Department is one of the largest employer organizations in Nepal which works under the Ministry of Information and Communications (MOIC).

  • For over 200 years, we've delivered your mail in the Netherlands and beyond.

In the 18th century a messenger ran from city to city with the post under his arm. He delivered the mail to postmen, who then gave to recipients. . . The messenger ran about eight hours a day . . then along came the horse . . then the carriage . .

In 1989, PTT was privatized. This PTT Post was together with PTT Telecom and part of the Royal PTT Netherlands (KPN). This decoupling from the state led to more business opportunities and more room for entrepreneurship. PTT Post preserved its monopoly.

After acquisition of the Australian TNT PTT Post was large enough to continue independently. This meant a division of the company, and PTT Telecom continued under the name KPN. PTT Post was renamed TNT Post Group (TPG). On June 28, 1998 the division was a fact.

At the beginning of the 21st century, two developments came together. The first is the increase in digitization, thereby reducing the amount of physical mail . . . The second is the liberalization of the postal market, creating more competition. In the early 21st century, the postal service was therefore radically reorganized. TPG changed to TNT Post . .

The two major divisions of TNT - Post and Express, growing increasingly apart, with their own strategies. . . TNT Express splits off and goes (as) postal company PostNL . . . in 2011.

  • The Netherlands Antilles (Dutch: Nederlandse Antillen, Papiamentu: Antia Hulandes), also referred to informally as the Dutch Antilles, was an autonomous Caribbean country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Although the country has now been dissolved, all of its constituent islands remain part of the kingdom . . . 10 October 2010.

The Netherlands Antilles consisted of two distinct island groups. The ABC Islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are located in the southern Caribbean Sea, just off the Venezuelan coast. The SSS islands of Sint Maarten (actually a territory covering a bit less than half an island), Saba, and Sint Eustatius are in the Leeward Islands southeast of the Virgin Islands near the northern end of the Lesser Antilles, approximately 800–900 kilometers (500–560 miles) northeast of the ABC Islands.

  • In 2008 the government of New Caledonia debated the introduction of a regional official flag and anthem, as required by the Accord de Nouméa. A flag in fairly widespread unofficial use was the flag of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS), a political party favoring independence for New Caledonia, but the French tricolor would remain the only official flag for the next two years.

On 17 July 2010, French Prime minister François Fillon took part in a ceremony in Nouméa where the FLNKS flag was hoisted alongside the French tricolor, giving both flags official status. Shortly before the visit the New Caledonia Congress voted overwhelmingly to adopt the Kanak flag alongside the French tricolor.

In June 1940, after the fall of France, the Conseil General of New Caledonia voted unanimously to support the Free French government, and in September the pro-Vichy governor was forced to leave for Indochina. In March 1942, with the assistance of Australia, the territory became an important Allied base, and Nouméa the headquarters of the United States Navy and Army in the South Pacific. The fleet which turned back the Japanese navy in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942 was based at Nouméa. American troops counted up to 50,000 men, the equivalent of the contemporary population.

In 1946, New Caledonia became an overseas territory. By 1953, French citizenship had been granted to all New Caledonians, regardless of ethnicity.

New Zealand Collectors & Dealers Directory
    (Extensive!)
  • The company was created on 1 April 1987 as a state-owned enterprise from the corporatisation of the New Zealand Post Office, a government department, following the recommendations of the 1986 Mason-Morris Review. The other state-owned enterprises formed from the New Zealand Post Office: the erstwhile monopoly telephone operator (Telecom Corporation of New Zealand Limited), and a savings bank (PostBank), were later privatised.

New Zealand Post began its life with 1,244 post offices, later rebranded as PostShops. Of these 906 full post offices and 338 postal agencies, 600 post offices or bank branches were downsized or closed after government subsidies expired in February 1988. As of March 1998, there are 297 PostShops, and 705 Post Centres. However, there are now more outlets than before corporatisation, with 2,945 other retailers of postage stamps. There was a reduction in the 'real' price of postage, with a nominal drop of the postage rate from 45 cents to 40 cents in 1996, and restoration of the 45 cent rate in 2004. Since then the cost has risen to 50 cents in 2007, to 60 cents in 2010 and to 70 cents in 2012.

The Postal Services Act 1998, passed by a National-New Zealand First coalition government, repealed the 1987 Act. The new law provides for any person to become a registered postal operator by applying to the Ministry of Economic Development. Registration as a postal operator is compulsory for letters with postage less than 80 cents. Despite the Act, government regulation of the company still requires it to maintain certain minimum service levels, such as frequency of delivery.

New Zealand Post's exclusive right to be the 'sole operator' under the Act for the purposes of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) expired on 1 April 2003. For practical purposes, this meant another postal operator could theoretically issue stamps identified simply as 'New Zealand' with UPU membership. At around the same time, New Zealand Post adopted a fern-shaped identifying mark on its postage stamps, to be used on the majority of its future issues.

Since 1998 New Zealand Post has been legally obliged to deliver six days a week, but in 2013 the company outlined a plan to reduce this to three, in the wake of falling mail volumes. Prime Minister John Key backed the idea, saying people "genuinely understand that the world is changing".

  • The first European known to have sighted the island was Captain James Cook, in 1774, on his second voyage to the South Pacific on HMS Resolution. He named it after Mary Howard, Duchess of Norfolk (c. 1712 – 1773).

Sir John Call argued the advantages of Norfolk Island in that it was uninhabited and that flax grew there. In 1786 the British government included Norfolk Island as an auxiliary settlement, as proposed by John Call, in its plan for colonisation of New South Wales. The decision to settle Norfolk Island was taken due to Empress Catherine II of Russia's decision to restrict sales of hemp. Practically all the hemp and flax required by the Royal Navy for cordage and sailcloth was imported from Russia.

. . . The island served as a convict penal settlement until May 1855, except for an 11-year hiatus between 1814 and 1825, when it was abandoned. In 1856 permanent civilian residence on the island began when it was settled from Pitcairn. In 1901, the island became a part of the Commonwealth of Australia.

It is one of two territories with "Commonwealth" status; the other is Puerto Rico. The United States Census Bureau reports the total land area of all islands as 183.5 square miles (475.26 km2). As of the 2010 census, the Northern Mariana Islands had a population of 53,883, of whom over 90% live on the island of Saipan. Of the 14 other islands, only two – Tinian and Rota – are permanently inhabited.
