Acquisition of the Boswell Papers

The Treasure of Auchinleck: The Story of the Boswell Papers by David Buchanan, McGraw Hill Book Company. Published in 1974

Mr. Buchanan is the son of the attorney who represented Lt. Colonel Ralph H. Isham in the litigation to obtain title to all of the documents.  The volume covers all the events dealing with the discovery of the papers, their history and  the actions taken that ultimately led to their purchase by Yale.  It is very readable, intriguing and one of the best literary tales ever written.  It is never dull or boring.

Pride and Negligence: The History of the Boswell Papers
Frederick A. Pottle, McGraw Hill Book Company. Published in 1982

An extremely detailed and scholarly narrative discussing the various discoveries, history and final acquisition of the papers by Yale.  Professor Pottle was employed by Lt. Colonel Isham to edit the original papers. He was involved in editing, collating and the selection process and considered to be most knowledgeable authority. He is entirely sympathetic to Boswell's indiscretions.
