The Vow of Poverty

I kneel before the Manger

That holds my only wealth;

My portion be such poverty

In sickness and in health.

I do not need my riches

Or other treasures found;

I will not own the garment

That wraps my body round.

I adore You in your Nothingness

Upon my bended knee;

And I behold Your helplessness

And naked Poverty.

How greatly have You suffered

To come here from above!

Such Glory seals this holy place-

Such Beauty and such Love!

May Poverty not leave me,

And may I never stray

Beyond the place of infancy

And first hour of the Day.

In Grace and in Simplicity

Forever to abide;

Tomorrow lead me on ahead,

And I shall walk beside.

Sister Giles.
