The Dinosaurs

The Dinosaurs are dying out, leaving us.
They are all very nearly extinct.
Their bones are being auctioned at Sotheby's-
Each one wrapped in cellulose-
The world must be changing, I think.
There are also fewer and fewer nuns in the old-fashioned mode,
Inquisitors and grandiloquent remonstrators=
These, too, are dying out, with the Cardinals of the Curia,
And the Royalty, the Barons and the Dukes.
There will be no more severity, repentance or fasting=
No tears of remorse for ourselves,
For the older things have passed away,
And the new have come with joy.
We shall wander the star-studded fields
Like children, free and untrammelled.
We shall gather the roses and fear no danger,
And not ever strain our ears
For the thunderous hoof we dread.
For they are all dying out, those predators,
All dying out, at last.
