One Thing

I cherish but a single thing

In life of flesh and bone;

The music of the song I sing

Is made for this alone.

It sometimes thunders from above-

I used to shake with fear;

But since I learned how strong is love,

My help is ever near.

For love can heal all wounded things

And recompense all pain;

When I have love, then sorrow sings,

And loss is turned to gain.

Happy he who sweetness craves,

But happier far is he

Who blesses Him Who always loves,

Whose light he fails to see.

I thank Him, then, for all my life-

Its joys and poverty;

I am content with thorns and strife

For these Christ bears with me.

And this shall be my heart s desire

When troubles follow me:

To know love passes through the fire

And drowns not in the sea.
