| An Explanation of the Issue | ||||||||||||||||
| Since 1992, Accokeek has been divided down the middle by a slice of Developing Tier. The Council is currently working on a Rural Tier Sectional Map Amendment, so they can reunify Accokeek as a part of that process. It is our best chance for the next 5 - 10 years to make this happen, so we need your help! Accokeek is historically and by character a rural area. We are asking that all of Accokeek be rezoned to Rural Tier. If Accokeek is rezoned to Rural Tier, its zoning will change, meaning that development here will slow considerably, and that some kinds of development, such as large-scale commercial development will not be allowed at all. That part of Accokeek is designated as the Developing Tier means that it is zoned for high density development, such as what is happening in Clinton right now. Many parts of Accokeek that seem very rural are actually not in the Rural Tier at all. For example, Calvert Manor is not in the Rural Tier, meaning that any undeveloped land in that area can be developed at a very high density. Farmington Road and Livingston Road tend to separate Rural from Developing Tier on the west side of Accokeek, but the division goes in to neighborhoods. For example, a few lots on Bryan Point Road past Farmington are in the Developing Tier. A few lots on Accolawn Road are as well. Only the right sides of Accokeek Road West and Old Marshall Hall Roads are Rural Tier. Please help us reunify the Accokeek Community. Because of the inappropriate develpment that has already occured along 210, many people forget that Accokeek actually spans both sides of the highway. It is time to unite our community again -- to come together and demand that our natural resources and the rural way of life we have chosen be preserved. |
