Testing My Metal
Metal is one of my obsessions. It is a marvelous medium to work in. Especially now that modern science has come up with so many new alloys, materials and inventive tools to use with it. Even so, my main interest is in antiquities; designs and techniques from hundreds and thousands of years ago.
I used to think metal was unyielding, cold and indestructible, but I have grown to understand it as the mutable, delicate material that I must spend great effort to keep unmarred and pristine. Even the very oils on our hands can damage it and bring a tarnish to an otherwise mirror shine.  I create, I form, I teach, I admire. I play with fyre.
I refinished the blade from one lost under a sink pitted with water damage corrosion. PMC lets you press set man made gems, forming thier own bezel as they dry and kiln.
The ulu is #1 steel with a bead blasted design. The handle is antler inlaid with bronze, brass and silver thumb pad shaped like a "sun-eye".
Scupltured silver PMC moon faces with red saphire eyes.
If you look closely you can see the bronze worms in the fish's mouths.
The dots on the die box are wrong, but the hinge and lock are almost perfect.
The "dice" box is just big enough to fit a die into. The pendent is a sea turtle and the hour glass is made of extruded syringe PMC. All are silver.
This is a silver "sculpture" piece. The earrings are wearable, just very heavy. The fish are suspended on a silver hook and some of the scales are bead blasted for texture.
It won best metals one year and twenty minutes before I had melted a hole in the side, which I was able to repair completely.
This is my very first piece, ah it is all down hill from here.
This duel goblet has two different sized cups. It is totally fabricated from silver sheet. Even the stem is rolled and hammered silver sheet. The stem support design duplicates rose leaves.
This is a fabricated brass clasp. I love the feather design and will probably do more. It can be used for a cloak clasp or to restrain hair.
