"In every competition since the dawning of time, some have always excelled. They exceed expectations and bypass the competition, leaving the weak in their wake. These men take what they want, when they want to and back down from no-one." one-on-one...at last The scene opens to a fairly large kitchen, with white walls and pine cabinets above the work-surfaces. Standing at the sink is a woman in her mid-to-late twenties, wearing blue denim jeans and a green t-shirt. She turns around to the back door that leads to the garden as it swings open. Spike walks through the door, wearing black denim jeans and blue t-shirt. He makes his way over to the fridge and opens the door, taking an ice-cold can of coke out of the side door. He offers one to his sister, but she declines. Spike walks over to the large round table in the middle of the kitchen and pulls out a chair. He sits down at the table, bathed in the beaming sunlight that is pouring through the open door and the windows. He opens the can and takes a drink from it before placing it down on the table beside him. Sarah: I'm glad you've decided to try to work it out, at last. Spike: So am I. After all those months, we've finally been able to put our differences aside and try to pick up where we left off. Sarah: So when are you going to go get her? Next week? Spike: Yeah I am. I'll go down after this Sunday. She had some stuff to take care of first, so she said to leave it 'till next week. Sarah: Well, we'll be gone soon. Spike: I don't want you to feel like you have to move out, just because she's coming up here. You can stay as long as you want to. You do know that, right? Sarah: Yeah, I know. Kelly's starting back at school soon, so I'd rather get back and get settled again before that starts. You know, things will be hectic enough without moving back. Spike: Well you're welcome here anytime. After all, you are my sister. The two share a smile and Sarah continues to speak. Sarah: What made her change her mind about coming up here? I thought she was set on staying back down there. Spike: She was. There's a lot of reasons really, but I don't want to push it too much, just in case she changes her mind. Sarah: Understandable. Do you think you two can make it work now? Spike: I really hope so. If it doesn't work this time then it'll be the end of it. I guess only time will tell. Sarah: I suppose so. Has this whole situation thrown you off about this week? With your match? Spike: No, not at all. I'm ready for it. This is the match that I've been waiting for my whole career, one where everyone will stand up and take notice of me. Win or lose, both me and Angelo will be remembered for this one. No-one else in our company can say that they will have gone for sixty minutes with the best. Spike stands up from the table and walks back over to the back door. Spike: We will finally find out who is the better man. I think that's what it's really about, on some level anyway. We've both said that we're better than each other, but neither of us have ever proved it. This week, one of us will. Sarah: I'm sure it will be you Sean. Spike: You have to say that, we're family. I'm going back outside for a while. I'll see you in a bit. Sarah: Okay, I'll finish up here and come out and join you, make the most of the weather. Spike walks out of the door and stands looking out over his garden. Large oak trees cover the far end with bushes and other smaller trees bordering the rest of the garden. He walks down a small gravel path leading to the oak trees at the bottom and sits down on a wooden bench, barely in the shade from the sun. He leans back in his seat, his legs crossed and his one arm resting along the top edge of the bench and looks directly at the camera. Spike: So Angelo, I caught what you had to say the other day. Some very profound words of wisdom, you should be a philosopher. There was one thing that confused me a little. If you'll excuse me for a moment, I'll even quote you. "I’m sorry it has to come down to this, but this is the way it has to be, and this is the way I wanted it." If it's the way you wanted it then why are you sorry that it's come to it? It is funny how things work out. We go from not even knowing each other to being prepared for a true battle in only little over a month. You want to go over the hill and meet immortality? Let me be the one to help you Angelo. With this match, win or lose, we're both heading for immortality. There isn't much time left now to prepare for my latest challenge. There is just a few short days before I step into the ring with one of the most talented performers on the roster, Angelo Rivera. The 'powers that be' really thought up a good one for this, a real crowd pleaser, a sixty-minute iron man match. After sixty minutes of me and him going at it, I don't really think that either of us will be able to truly say that we look like winners. Too many people these days run their mouths about their youth and how much of their career they have left, but I'm not like that. I may not be twenty four any more, but I'm far from past it. A lot of these young kids like to say that the losses they suffer are inconsequential, that they still have the prime of their careers to come. Well, my prime isn't yet to come, but then again, it hasn't already passed me by, it's right now. Spike pauses for a moment as the sound of wind chimes echo through the air. He looks over the fence to his left to see some chimes on his neighbors back porch, blowing gently in the summer breeze. Spike: If ever there was a time when I was physically and mentally ready to go sixty minutes in a match, it's now. I know that sooner or later, my time will pass and it will be the time of the young guys, people like Angelo Rivera. But now, now it's my time. I was at the top of the mountain before, and ask anyone that has been there, you'd give anything to get back to it. I don't really know what's worse, having it and losing it or never having it at all. There is one thing that I do know for certain though. If I win this week, and become the Simcoe County Heavyweight Champion for a second time, I won't let it go. That title is the most sought after and respected title in this company and to hold that means that you are truly the best. Angelo Rivera, just like me, you've fought your way to get a shot at that title, a shot at immortality. You beat the best that Friday Night Firefight had to offer, even though that really wasn't all that much. I beat the best that Sunday Night Slam had to offer. And now, it's down to you and me. The best of the best, the elite. I know that sooner or later, people will rise to the occasion and try to knock us from the top two spots in the company. People like Wolf, Sloppy Joe, Jason Steele, they aren't the type to sit back and watch other people take glory that they feel they can take for themselves. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm going to make the most of this opportunity. I am going to treat this match like no other. It's the single most important night of both of our lives. On that night, there will be two things happening. One will be the crushing of someone's dreams, their hopes, their tenacity, and the other will be the realization of true greatness. Everyone will expect me now to go on and say how I will be the one who gets the realization and you will be the one who will be crushed, but Angelo, in all honesty, I really don't know. Me admitting that doesn't give you a psychological advantage, it doesn't give you the edge over me, 'cause deep down Angelo, I know you're thinking the same thing. We are both waiting to see who is the best, this has been building for weeks now, and soon, very soon, we will finally know the answer. We will finally know who can really call themselves the best and who just comes in at second place. I could do what everyone else does, and even what I do in most situations, talk trash about you Angelo. But where would that get me? Really? Nowhere. You see, you're a lot like me. I've had people talk down to me and call me everything under the Sun, but where did that get them? It made them all look stupid when I shut their mouths and made them eat their words. The same keeps happening with you Angelo. People that have put you down in the past and talked trash about you all got their mouths shut and all of them had to eat their words. That's what we do Angelo, we overcome the odds. The only thing we have really said to each other is bragging about not being able to beat each other. And so far, we've both been right. We may have only met in the ring twice, but on neither occasion could either of us make a pinfall or submission over the other. It's strange how we're going to go from that to having possibly several victories over each other, all in one night. But then again, we might get to the end of sixty minutes, and still be at a stalemate, who knows, to be honest neither scenario would surprise me. A noise from the kitchen gets Spikes attention and he looks up suddenly. He sees Sarah on the back porch and looks at the camera for one final comment. Spike: Angelo, this is the moment you've been waiting for, you're call to the big time, are you going to be able to answer it? Sarah gets to Spike and sits down on the bench next to him as the scene slowly fades to black. |
