Master of Ceremonies Douglas Sills opened the Giant Cast Party tossed by South Coast Repertory.

"It's like coming home," said Sills, hero of The Broadway musical, "The Scarlet Pimpernel," and former SCR actor. "Tonight we celebrate how two college chums managed to avoid work the rest of their lives," he said.

SCR founders Martin Benson and David Emmes admitted there was truth to Sills' remark. "It's been a good partnership," Emmes noted of their 35th season.

Dozens of SCR actors and several patrons gathered to toast SCR's success Saturday. After an al fresco buffet, guests filled SCR's main stage to view a documentary highlighting SCR's 35 years. The tribute was produced by director Lee Shallat Chemel, who lists among her directing credits "Murphy Brown" and "Mad About You." Said Chemel, "This project turned out to be bigger than I expected; I spent about 3 1/2 months doing this little film. But I did it as a `thank you, SCR. ' I got my start as a director here." Chemel's film featured poignant, sometimes hilarious interviews with the repertory's founding artists: Ron Boussom, Richard Doyle, Art Koustik, Hal Landon Jr., Don Took and Martha McFarland who called SCR "a magical place." Olivia Johnson chaired the celebration.
