Run Don't Walk to See "The Scarlet Pimpernel LA.com Gossip
...the Tony Award-nominated musical at the Ahmanson Theater. If you don't live in Los Angeles fly in to see it because it is a rare evening of theatre. The delightful story is about a hero of the French Revolution who rescues victims slated for the guillotine and has his own band of resistance fighters. They cleverly create a disguise as pompous and silly fops, overly-dressed slaves to fashion whose only interests seem to be the frivilous. The dialogue is delightful, the music divine and the cast is sensational. To be singled out is Douglas Sills whose perfomance as the elusive and delightfully foppish Pimpernal is brilliant. He is on almost entirely during the perfomance, no easy feat. Sills is also very easy on the eyes as is Amy Bodnar at Marguerite and the equally brilliant and villianous William Paul Michal as Chauvelin. The costumes and clever sets constantly delight the eye and it all blends together into a seamless evening of musical-comedy theatre. You will leave the theatre refreshed, smiling and humming the gorgeous score by Frank Wildhorn. Just to see Sills alone is worth it all, he was the toast of Broadway during the run of the play. But remember the play runs until June 18th.
