Definitions

Corporal punishment can be defined as the use of physical force with the intention of causing a child to experience pain, but not injury, for the purpose of correction of the child's behavior.

Spanking is a particular kind of corporal punishment. It is done by spanking (slapping, smacking) the child's bottom. A spanking can be applied on the bare or on the clothed bottom, with the palm of the hand or with an implement, such as a paddle, strap or cane.

Spanking with love describes the use of disciplinary spanking by parents in a loving, non-abusive way. Dangerous, cruel, violent or abusive forms of spanking are strongly discouraged here. Other forms of corporal punishment, such as mouth-washing or face-slapping, are not discussed on this website. Neither are non-corporal forms of punishment, such as time-outs or the removal of privileges.
