THE OCCASIONAL ORBITER Monday August 19, 2002 Vol.84 **** Schickling Breaks Out in Victory **** Lance Shickling finnally showed everything he was capable of in the 'boys fifty (50) to forty-two (42) win over the "thuggy thuggs" of Plastiline last Tuesday night. Mr. Schickling poured in twenty-four (24) of the team's fifty (50) points on ten (10) of seventeen (17) shooting. On a night when the rest of the team was not on their proverbial game, Lance stepped up and led the team. With the "W" the Space Cowboys upped their record to four (4) wins and one (1) loss. They also recorded their thrid consecutive win. "BMBK", who was not present for personal reasons, was missed greatly. Without the bigman in the lineup the home team had nothing working on the inside. Mr. Keene IS their inside game. The 'boys started out a little cold from the beginning. No shots were falling and it was a battle for the entire first period. Other than Mr. Shcickling, no one could get into any sort of rhythme. The rest of the team shot a miserable 38% (9/24) from the field. This just goes to show how much will this team has. They knew they had to step up the defense and they did. Thye weren't making shot, so they didnt take as many. The team was looking for Lance every time down. And he came through. **** Box Score August 13, 2002 **** Name No. Fgm Fga 3ptm 3pta Ftm Fta TP K.Lubbers 10 - - - - - - - Brinkman 20 1 6 1 5 0 0 3 N.Lubbers 23 4 9 2 5 1 2 11 Jeffries 24 0 5 0 5 1 2 1 Ash 30 3 9 3 9 0 0 9 Boyer 33 1 5 0 2 0 1 2 Schickling 34 10 17 3 5 1 2 24 Keene 44 - - - - - - - Totals 218 19 41 9 31 3 7 50 46% 29% 43% Attendance: 5 (Batsche, Glass, Kaylor, Kidd, Young) Season Attendance: 29 Special Thanks to Scorekeeper Jessica Kidd **** Next Game Tuesday August 20, 2002 **** The Space Cowboys will be in action once again on Tuesday August 20 at 9 P.M. at Sports of All Sorts in Florence. They will be taking on the real "thuggy thuggs" of The Junior Mafia. looking to extend their winning streak to four (4) and their record to five (5) and one (1). All that is known of these 'thuggs is that the "Elite Eight" or "thuggy thuggs of the mmrrrr variety", defeated them by around twenty (20) points. No team is ever overlooked, but the 'boys will be ready to take "it" at them come gametime. The 'boys will be looking to extend their record to five (5) and one (1); their best start since beginning the Summerm Season last year with six (6) straight victories. The difference between these two teams is exactly that, they are a team. Last summer the 'boys aquired one Ted Arlinghaus to try and make a run at the Sports of All Sorts Tuesday Night League Championship. After those six straight wins Mr. Arlinghaus returned to Lexington to continue his education. The "team" fell apart and lost their last four. This summer the team is a team. Mr. Shickling has been aquired for the same reasons as Mr. Arlinghas, but has "meshed" much better with the current roster. He does things that Ted had not even thought about. He passes the ball, but still has the head to take over when it is needed. So far, in the first five (5) games of hte season, three different members of the Space Cowboys have led the team in scoring in a particular game. It's a different person stepping up their level of play each week to help the team succeed. Needless to say the team as a whole will have to step up their play if they want to finish the season as strong as they have started it. The second half continues tomorrow, August 20 at 9 P.M. at Sports of All Sorts in Florence as the Space Cowboys take on The Junior Mafia. Doors will open at 8:38 with pregame activies following shortly thereafter. **** Space Cowboys Jerseys **** The Space Cowboys would like apologize now for what you are about to hear. When the news reached the organization about the most recent setback in the new jerseys, no one was surprised. When the jerseys were picked up from the dealer it was noticed they were not made to the specifications set upon making the order. Someone from the front office will be making a trip to Eggelston and Maynard Sports tomorrow to try and straighten out the debacle that has become of the shirt order. The feeling at the moment is that the shirts will have to be remade, thus the wait will continue. Everything that can be done, will be to help in the conclusion of this travesty. **** Roster Moves **** After yet another poor performance Kevin Brinkman has once more been optioned to the Louisville affiliate Earth Cowboys of the International League. Mr. Brinkman was shooting a worthless 21% in five games with the Space Cowboys. Kevin has become the Chris Sexton of the organization. He will once again be working with long time coach Buddy Lee, to try and get his "game" back together. Replacing Mr. Brinkman on the roster will be newcomer James Boyer. Mr. Boyer has already played in three (3) games this season as an "Emergency Replacement" and done a suitable job. The hope is high for this up and comer. He has shown small glimpses of what he can be. It is just a matter of putting all the tools together for this kid to be a superstar. Mr. Boyer has been given a 28 day contract. His status will be reevaluated at the end of the season. **** Space Cowboys Softball Update **** The Space Cowboys softball team concluded play in yet another league this past week. The Friday night team was nipped eight (8) to four (4) in a hard fought game. Their season is now over. Congratulations boys on a solid sophmore season. The Saturday Co-Ed team ended their regular season over the weekend with an eighteen (18) to eight (8) rout to pull their record to a fabulkar and spectaculous ten (10) and two (2). They will begin play in the tournament this Saturday at 3 P.M. at the Sports Complex at F.O.P.A. They will play once more at 5 P.M. if they win. Good Luck Cowboys!
