THE OCCASIONAL ORBITER Thursday July 18, 2002 Vol.80 Hi, hello and welcome fellow Cowboys of the Space variety to this first 2002 Summer Season edition of your occasional reading. **** Cowboys Victorious in Season Opener **** The Space Cowboys came out on the winning side of the score in Tuesday night's game against the "thuggy thuggs" of the Mmrrr variety(aka the Elite Eight) fifty-three (53) to thiry-nine (39). The home team led for most of the way in this highly anticipated "grudgematch". This game pitted friend against friend, "buddy" against "fella" and emotions were running high. It began as a back and forth struggle. Neith team could get the ball to fall through the hoop, but before long the 'boys took control. After gaining the lead at nine (9) to eight (8) they did not look back. They extended the lead to thirty-two (32) - twenty (20) at the half. The second half was very evenly matched with the Cowboys outscoring the Mmrrr's twenty-one (21) to nineteen (19). It seemed as they just could not extend the lead past twelve (12) points. Overall the 'thuggs put up a very good fight, but being smaller and inexperienced together did not help their cause. We will be looking forward to their rematch on September 3rd. There seemed to be a "plethora" of bright spots for the Space Cowboys, the most noticable being that of "Big Man" Ben Keene. Mr. Keene dominated in the paint and recored for the first time back to back double digit performances. BMBK scored fourteen in the 'boys loss in the tournament last Spring and contributed eleven (11) on five (5) of ten (10) shooting to start the Summer Season out right. Lance Schickling also was a bright spot for the home team. In his psace Cowboys debut he scored twelve (12) point also on five (5) of ten 910) shooting from the field. But Mr. Schickling broght much more than his twelve (12) points to the table. He was somewhat the "floor general" out there, leading the team to victory. One Cowboy said it remnded him of the movie "Victory", he could just hear the chanting from the crowd, "victoire, victoire." Yet another bright spot was the play of "second timer" James Boyer. After shooting horrendous zero (0) for seven (7) in his debut last Fall, James came out with a tremendous effort and six (6) points to show for it. Also not to be forgotten is Dave Iles. Mr. Iles was also a substitute and although he missed his only field goal attempt, he played the most tenacious defense of all. Finnaly, Kevin Brinkman. Mr. Brinkman is beginning the season with the "big club" for the first time in three (3) seasons. He began the season a little slow from the field, connecting on just one (1) of four (4) three point attempts. But his rebounding was "fabular and spectaculous." Kevin was actually seen leaving the floor twice in an effort to control a rebound and did so euccessfully both times. This win was an overall team effort. Hopefully when the rest of the team return they chemistry will be as good as it was Tueday night. **** Box Score July 16, 2002 **** Name No. Fgm Fga 3ptm 3pta Ftm Fta TP K.Lubbers 10 - - - - - - - Iles 11 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 Brinkman 20 1 4 1 4 0 0 3 N.Lubbers 23 8 13 5 8 0 0 21 Jeffries 24 - - - - - - - Ash 30 - - - - - - - Boyer 33 3 7 0 0 0 0 6 Schickling 34 5 10 0 2 2 2 12 Keene 44 5 10 0 0 1 4 11 Totals 229 22 45 6 14 3 6 53 49% 43% 50% Attendance: 4 (Batsche, Kaylor, Keene, Young) Season Attendance: 4 Special Thanks to Scorekeeper Christina Batsche **** Box Score: Elite Eight **** Name No. Fgm Fga 3ptm 3pta Ftm Fta TP Gerwe 20 7 16 0 5 0 0 14 Aseere 5 1 9 0 4 1 1 3 Elsbernd 1 2 0 0 0 0 2 Terrance 2 5 9 0 0 1 2 11 Trapp 14 1 3 1 2 0 0 3 Rasp 1 3 7 0 2 0 0 6 Totals 18 46 1 13 2 3 39 39% 8% 67% Scorekeeper: Dan Resing **** Next Game Tuesday July 23, 2002 **** The Space Cowboys will next be in action on Tuesday July 23 at 7 P.M. at Sports of All Sorts in Florence.
