THE OCCASIONAL ORBITER Hi, hello, and welcome, fellow Cowboys of the Space variety it's time for your occasional reading. **** Space Cowboys Season Ends **** The Space Cowboys, coming in to tonight's game, had a good chance to make the playoffs. All they needed was a win against the JTC "thugg e. thuggs" whom they already defeated once ealier this season. But i guess it just wasn't meant to be. After forcing an extra "frame" the 'boys came up short in a heartbreaker, fifty-eight (58) to fifty-five (55). Things started out well for the home team, as they lept out to an early sixteen (16) to six (6) lead. After that the 'boys went cold, falling behind twenty-three (23) to twenty-one (21). Part of the comeback can be attributed once again to a mid game aquistion by the opponent. It seems that one of the "thugg e. thuggs" star players was a not aware of the "tipoff" time and arrived a little "late". The Cowboys weren't discouraged though going into half time down by just five points. They were still right in the "thick" of things. Then the second (2nd) half started. JTC started out the second (2nd) half "en fuego", or "on fire". They quickly extended their lead to eleven points. Things were beginnging to look "not so good" for the good ole boys. But, sparked by some "tenacious" defense, the 'boys were able to pull themselves back into the game. Also a little helpful was the "clutch" shooting of "fat guard" Jeremy Jeffries, who hit a few threes (3's) down the stretch to keep the Cowboys within "striking distance". They were able to hold on and force a three (3) minute overtime period with the score tied at forty-eight (48). Things looked good for the first portion of the overtime after a made three (3), but the "thugg e. thuggs" just kept matching them. In the end it all came down to free throws, which JTC made two (2) of with six (6) seconds on the clock, to give them a three (3) point lead. After the made free throws, Mr. Jeffries recieved a nice inbound pass at about midcourt, but couldn't pull one out of his ass this time and the clock expired with the Space Cowboys coming up a mere three (3) points shy of the post season. There were, as always, a few bright spots for the home team. As mentioned previously, Mr. Jeffries had a good shooting performance, coming up with the big shots when they were needed. And we can't forget forward Kevin Brinkman, who drew a team record three (3) charges, all of which came in the first half. And on top of that added a solid nine (9) points. Also, emergency player, John Rasp, came off the bench to hit a "clutch" free throw, to give the Cowboys a one point lead, that they obviously couldn't hang on to. If only Mr. Rasp was good and could have made both free throws. ****Box Score June 12th 2001 **** Name No. Fgm Fga 3ptm 3pta Ftm Fta TP Jeffries 24 5 11 3 7 3 7 16 Keene 44 1 5 0 0 3 4 5 Brinkman 13 3 9 2 7 1 2 9 Suedkamp 35 - - - - - - - N. At the present time the day of the week and the starting date are not yet confirmed. But once the information has been recieved it will be on the presses "right now". **** News and Notes **** For just the second time this year, Cowboy "big man" Keith Suedkamp has a legitimate excuse for being MIA at tonights game. Mr. Suedkamp was stricked ill and was unable to attend this "make or break" game. It is still "up in the air" whether he will return for a third (3rd) season with the Space Cowboys....Also unknown is the satus of emergency "fill in" Jonathon Rasp. Mr. Rasp, who played a big part in the disaterous loss, may be kept on the roster to fill the role Luis Quinones couldn't....The return of Daivd Isles to the Cowboys is also still "up in the air", as he has not been contacted....****Yes, you know what this means, for the second (2nd) week in a row, the single game attendance record has been broken. This week's crowd of fourteen, surpasses last week by just one....For just the second (2nd) time of the season the 'boys failed to score within the range of sixty-four (64) and sixty-eight (68) points, coming in at a season low fifty-five (55)....Looking back, the Cowboys tend to be more successfull when the make more baskets. **** T-Shirt Reminder **** Just a reminder that the "offical" T-Shirts of the Space Cowboys are on order and are going to be available around the twenieth (20th) of June. The shirts will cost thirteen (13) dollars ($) apeice and again, no shirts will be distributed without first recieving said thirteen (13) dollars ($). **** Space Cowboys Softball Update **** Don't forget, the Space Cowboys Softball team is next in action this Friday, June 15th, at the new sports complex at FOPA in Latonia. First pitch is at 7:15, with pregame activities beginning at approxamatly 6:57. So, don't miss out on some "great" softball, this Friday. Also, since there is still a vacancy for the softball "correspondent", no softball news will be published in the near future. With the basketball team now in the "off season" the Occasional Orbiter's publishings will be few and far between. If anyone would like to see more updated and detailed stats from the Space Cowboys Softball team, feel free to email us your resume, as the job still could be filled. But as of now, Space Cowboys Softball does not exist in the eyes of the Occasional Orbiter. **** Final Season Averages **** N.
