It
was 1993. I was just a new member then, from batch 93A,
when I first heard about the idea of organizing an
alumni association. I still remember, during the 10th
year celebration of the founding of PLM-SOUL, some
alumni members volunteered and committed themselves into
drafting the articles of incorporation and by-laws of
the would-be organization. Maybe due to the hectic
schedules in their personal, professional, and spiritual
lives, the planned meetings failed to materialize. On
the contrary, after about a couple of years, a group of
alumni members was successful enough to draft the first
workable by-laws for the alumni association. The problem
then, I think, was on how to gather and reach out to the
increasing number of alumni members. Many of them can no
longer be traced in their addresses; some were already
working abroad. Such problems and the enormous tasks and
commitment confronting them halted the attempts to
formally establish the SOUL alumni association.
With the
years of silence in forming the association, the
resident members then were haunted by various problems;
some were serious that the alumni members had
intervened. With no formal procedures to follow, they
themselves were helpless in providing concrete solutions
to the problems encountered by the resident members. The
innocence and lack of power of the resident members in
handling serious and critical issues awakened once again
the urge of the alumni members to be organized.
It was
Christmas Party of 2001. A group of alumni members
seriously talked about pursuing the halted attempts to
establish an alumni association. With an alumnus to
provide and assist in the legal needs in establishing
its organization, their vision to be organized this time
is no longer far from reality.
On
a birthday celebration of another alumnus, the members
agreed to pull their financial resources since these are
necessary for the initial actions in achieving the goal.
Though some of them would be then leaving for abroad,
their passions to be organized were the same as the
others. They handed-over the first workable articles of
incorporation and by-laws to this group, crucial to the
founding of the alumni association. These later on
become the bases in drafting its own articles of
incorporation and by-laws.
January
26, 2002, a group of twenty (20) alumni members attended
a gathering by invitation conducted at Pamantasan ng
Lungsod ng Maynila. The gathering was limited to a
selected few since it would be impossible to invite and
gather the alumni members all at the same time. It was
agreed upon of all those present, now called the
Incorporators, to conduct the elections with regard to
the following: the official name of the organization;
the nine (9) members of the board of directors; and the
officers for specific positions. They also agreed to
draft the articles of incorporation and by-laws once the
members of the board of directors are elected. All of
which was witnessed by the resident members themselves.

That very
same day, the SOUL ALUMNI INCORPORATED or SOUL AI was
born. The nine (9) elected members of the board of
directors are as follows:
| President: |
|

From
then on, various meetings had been conducted at
different places to finalize the articles of
incorporation, by-laws, SOUL AI logo, bank account, and
the like, necessary for SEC registration. Though SOUL AI
has yet to be recognized legally as an organization
since its papers are still in the process at the
Securities and Exchange Commission, it has been formally
introduced as an alumni organization last May 18, 2002
on its first general assembly its baptism.
The rest,
some would say, is history.
This birth
of our beloved organization has been envisioned by many
yet has been elusive for years. They had struggled, and
now, we had succeeded in making it a reality. The growth
of this newborn organization depends largely on the
support and nurture of its parents—the alumni members
ourselves. The continuous efforts and cooperation, among
us members, shall determine the future and success of
this organization.
Mabuhay
ang SOUL AI !!!
