RECYCLING

 

            I read the papers

            and wonder

            which comes first in the cycle

            madness from without

            or within?

 

            the headlines rife

            with those who couldn’t cope

            heroes of all stripes

            fallen

            but for the names and places

            the stories always the same

 

            one year indistinguishable

            from another

            yet the cycle seemingly

            spinning faster - out of control

            picking up new casualties

            along the way

 

            when the police arrive to arrest them

            their newspapers piled neatly

            in recycling bins
