EVENT HORIZON

      what is this place?

      this unfolding nightmare

      so distant from the dream

      I knew as a child

      on a heaving rock

      propelled by hurricane

      and volcano

      surrounded by an ocean

      of humanity

      and yet never feeling

      more alone

      though the phone is ringing

      the Internet’s netting

      while a thousand little annoyances

      of information

      day in and day out

I have to keep sorted in my head

      we all know the score

in the end who loses the battle

      and yet continually praying

      somehow we might win

      reflected off

      long faced Mondays

and on Fridays when we put on

      our best smiles

      though we’re not kidding anyone

      especially ourselves

      the roller coaster

      is much too fast now

as it courses across an endless track

      of taxes and death

      our politicians can’t be taken

      at face value anymore

only a few more years of oil left

      to run the machine

      and always the jackal

who feels he has the answers

but needn’t question his own motives

      in sweeping the world

      of today’s flavor of infidel

      what is this place?

      this unfolding nightmare

      so distant from the dream

      I knew as a child
