

BRAZILREGION
Brazil Region is one of the 29 SIA's Regions. It was created in July, 1st,1996 and chartered in August, 3rd, 1996 in the city of Sao Vicente, SP. It comprehends all clubs in Brazilian territory.
The history of Soroptimist International in Brazil begins a long time ago.
It was 1945, San Francisco, CA and there was taking place the UN Conference. In there, BERTHA LUTZ, a Brazilian woman presenting herself as a woman with will and strengh, presented her proposition in defending women interests. The Soroptimists present at the event became admirors of that woman's work. She was awarded the "Helena Gamble Grant", at the East Park Convention, Colorado, in the Soroptimist International Silver Jubilee celebration.
Since then, they began the expansion to Brazil, with the help of Bertha Lutz. In September, 9th, 1947, Caroline Tibetti, North Atlantic Region Governor, chartered SI Rio de Janeiro. It was the first SI Club in South America. The expansion continued, and in July, 7th, 1953, SI Sao Paulo was chartered. This was only the begining. This fertile seed was spread to other Brazilian States and to other South American countries.
It was July, 1965, Rio de Janeiro, 10th Meeting of Clubs from Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Peru. Ethel Lord, SIA President-Elect, confirmed the instalation of the South America Region. Hildegard Stoltz, from SI Rio de Janeiro was elected the first Governor.
During the 24th Regional Congress of the South America Region, in April, 1996, it was confirmed the split into two Regions: Brazil Region and America del Sur Region. SIA President Elect Joan Cromer was present at this event.
Nowadays, there are 38 Clubs in the Brazil Region.
Every April, Brazilian clubs meet at the Regional Congress, when it is discussed the Clubs' actions and programs and are presented the propositions to enhance the development and growth of the Region. Once or twice a year, there are "Interclubs Meeting', in which every club of a given state are gathered to a "state" meeting.
