SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Obviously Sonic is the hero of the series. He's a brash blue hedgehog who prefers to act first and think later. He's not very emotional, but will put his life on the line without hesitation to help his friends, and to defeat the evil plans of Doctor Eggman. Sonic is very fast, and can run at supersonic speeds because of his special shoes that reduce friction. In addition, he likes "freestyle walking" - also known as grinding. Sonic's best friend is Tails, but he's on good terms with Knuckles, although not so much with Amy. He shares a rivalry with Shadow, and to some extent, Dr. Eggman. Notable Appearances: Every single Sonic game. Obviously. :P 3 cartoon shows 1 anime OVA, 1 anime series Comic-book series published by Archie Comics

MILES "TAILS" PROWER Sonic's first buddy and long-time friend, Miles Prower (but Tails to his friends) is a fox with a difference. He has two tails, which earned him his nickname. Tails is able to spin his tails together to fly for short distances, after which he gets tired. He adores Sonic, and is always trying to impress him. Tails is also somewhat of a mechanical genius, and designed and built Sonic's plane, the Tornado, which can also transform into a mechanical walker and a ground-based vehicle. He likes to tinker with his devices in his workshop located at the Mystic Ruins. Notable Appearances: Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic R, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle Also starred in his own games on the Sega Game Gear.

KNUCKLES THE ECHIDNA Knuckles is the guardian of Angel Island. He's regarded as the world's best treasure hunter, but must remain on Angel Island most of the time to guard the Master Emerald, a huge gem that keeps the Island afloat in the air. Knuckles is stoic and logical, but often jumps to the wrong conclusions. A case in point is his relationship with Sonic, where he quickly assumed that Sonic and Tails had come to Angel Island (in Sonic 3) to steal the Chaos Emeralds, whereas they had actually come to prevent Eggman from getting them. Knuckles is immensely strong, and likes working out. He has a love/hate relationship with Rouge, who always seems to get on his wrong side. Notable Appearances Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic R, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle Had his own game on the Sega 32X called "Knuckles Chaotix." It was a reasonably good game that also starred the Chaotix (see below).

AMY ROSE Amy Rose is Sonic's self-appointed girlfriend, and regards him as her hero. Sonic, of course, is less than happy about this. Amy likes to follow Sonic everywhere, even at great risk to her life. Of course, this often means that she often gets into sticky situations from which Sonic has to rescue her. Otherwise, Amy is very cheerful and optimistic, and never lets Sonic out of her sights. Notable Appearances Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2, Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle Amy was only playable in two games, Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast/GameCube) and Sonic Advance (Game Boy Advance). Her primary attack was a huge hammer that she conjured up from nowhere O_o

BIG THE CAT Big is a somewhat dim-witted cat who makes his home in the jungle of the Mystic Ruins. He lives with his best friend, Froggy (a frog, duh) and loves nothing more than a simple day of fishing. Of course, such an idyllic lifestyle couldn't last forever. Froggy was captured by E-102 Gamma (see below) and Big was forced to go looking for him. After finding him, he returned to his slow life in the Mystic Ruins and has been there ever since. Notable Appearances Sonic Adventure, Sonic Heroes Big also made numerous cameos in Sonic Adventure 2, such as the truck chase in City Escape and the boss battle between Sonic and Shadow in Green Forest.

E-102 GAMMA E-102 Gamma was one of Dr. Eggman's special E-Series robots, designed to serve aboard his Egg Carrier. E-102 was tasked to capture a flicky bird who had been rescued by Amy, yet she refused to yield. This confused him and eventually made him realise that he had his own free will, upon which he set out to free his fellow E-Series robots from their metallic prisons. Notable Appearances Sonic Adventure, Sonic Battle E-102 clones (called the E-1000 series) featured as enemies in some stages in Sonic Adventure 2.

ESPIO THE CHAMELEON Espio is the stealth wing of the Chaotix Detective Agency. He has ninja abilities, such as turning invisible and tossing impossibly large shuriken (ninja stars) everywhere. He is very suspicious of Dr. Eggman and will take any opportunity to defeat him. Notable Appearances Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic Heroes All the Chaotix characters also feature in the ongoing Sonic comic series.

CHARMY BEE Charmy is the second member of the Chaotix Detective agency. He is always cheerful and happy, sometimes to the chagrin of Vector and Espio. Notable Appearances Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic Heroes All the Chaotix characters also feature in the ongoing Sonic comic series.

VECTOR THE CROCODILE Vector is the leader of the Chaotix Detective Agency, and takes any opportunity to make money. As he says "We never turn down work that pays!" He is very logical and aggressive in his work, and has the muscle to back it up. Notable Appearances Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic Heroes All the Chaotix characters also feature in the ongoing Sonic comic series.

TIKAL Tikal is an echidna who lived many hundreds of years ago. Her tribe tried to take the seven Chaos Emeralds from the Chao who guarded them, but were overwhelmed by the Chao's caretaker, a water beast called Chaos. Tikal gave her life to seal Chaos in the Master Emerald, and her spirit resides with Chaos in it. Tikal hates fighting, and instead seeks peace. Notable Appearances Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure 2:Battle Tikal was not playable in SA, but was playable as a 2-player battle character in both SA2 and SA2:Battle.

DOCTOR ROBOTNIK/DOCTOR EGGMAN Dr. Eggman is the world's greatest scientific genius with an IQ of 300 (according to Sonic Team) and is a robotics expert. He has tried time and again to take over the world, but has always been thwarted by Sonic and his allies. He has designed numerous weapons of mass destruction, including the Death Egg and the Egg Carrier. He has also tried to use other weapons such as the Eclipse Cannon with which he blew up half of the moon. Dr. Eggman is ruthless and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Notable Appearances Most Sonic games made Eggman actually had his own game called Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. It was actually what the puzzle game Puyo Puyo became when Sega ported it to the United States. Good grief. -_-;;

CHAOS ZERO/ PERFECT CHAOS Chaos was the guardian of the Chaos Emeralds and the Chao hundreds of years ago. He is a water-based lifeform who can shift into any form. When his charges (the Chao) were attacked by Tikal's tribe, he went ballistic and absorbed the power of the Chaos Emeralds to become Perfect Chaos, a towering monolith of destruction. Tikal sealed him in the Master Emerald at the cost of her life. He was later released by Dr. Eggman, but eventually turned upon his benefactor. He was stopped by Sonic in his "Super" form. Notable Appearances Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure 2:Battle, Sonic Battle Similar to Tikal, Chaos is only playable as a 2-player battle character in SA2 and SA2B.

METAL SONIC Metal Sonic is a cybernetic duplicate of Sonic, created by Dr. Robotnik. He can do all that Sonic does, and more! Since he is just a robot, he has no personality to speak of...except in the Sonic anime, where he sacrificed his life to save Sonic's, saying that "There can only be one Sonic..." (his only line of dialogue in the whole movie). He returns in Sonic Heroes with a vengeance...to prove that he is the true Sonic! Notable Appearances Sonic CD, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure 2:Battle, Sonic Heroes Metal Sonic was the main villain in the Sonic anime. He was also featured in the Sonic comic in a special story by Danny Fingeroth (issues #86-#87). Metal Sonic was a 2-player battle character in SA2 and SA2B. Metal Sonic had a brief cameo in Sonic Adventure where you see him inside a stasis chamber in Robotnik's base, along with Silver Sonic from Sonic 2.

SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG Shadow looks very much like Sonic, but the similarity ends there. He can use the power of the Chaos Emeralds to teleport (Chaos Control). He was created 50 years ago by Gerald Robotnik (Eggman's grandfather) aboard the Space Colony ARK. Gerald was working on creating the Ultimate Life Form which could be used as a weapon of mass destruction. However, when the military raided the colony, only Shadow escaped alive; everyone else, including Shadow's closest friend, also Gerald's granddaughter, Maria, was lost. Shadow was eventually returned to stasis on Earth but was freed by Dr. Eggman. He remembers only one thing - that he must get revenge for Maria. He eventually realises, however, that his memories are false, and that Maria had asked him to help people on Earth be happy... Notable Appearances Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure 2:Battle, Sonic Heroes Shadow is way cooler than Sonic, IMO :D

ROUGE THE BAT Rouge is a bounty hunter who specialises in finding rare jewels. She appears too have a weakness for such gems, and will do anything to get them. She has an intense rivalry with Knuckles, but appears to have a bit of a soft spot for him as well :D Notable Appearances Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure 2:Battle, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle Rouge is certainly the most "mature" female character I've seen in the Sonic games, if you know what I mean...

CREAM THE RABBIT Cream is a young rabbit, who, together with her pet Chao, Cheese, always seems to be getting into trouble. She's good friends with Amy and Big, and is very friendly and outgoing. Notable Appearances Sonic Advance 2, Sonic Heroes,, Sonic Battle Cream is ANNOYING. DIE PLZ.
