how sonic?
As far as I can remember, my infatuation with Sonic the Hedgehog began one happy day in 1992 when I was walking down the pavement of Orchard Road, Singapore's premier shopping district, with my parents. I was seven at the time, and was naturally attracted to the large television displays in the various shops lining the road. Then it caught my eye - a display containing a video game that was unlike any other I'd seen before.
Up to that point in time, my experience with videogames had been limited to a friend's NES, with one of those bootleg '500 in 1' cartridges. Thus, the sight of a game that was faster than Mario stunned me. I only got a 2-minute glimpse of the game before I was dragged off by my mum.
That game was Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which had been released that year. I never saw that game again until I went over to my brother's friend's house...as it so happened, he had a Sega MegaDrive, and the original Sonic game. Hence, my journey began...
I believe that I've played most of the major Sonic games ever created, either through emulation or on the original systems...not all are good (*cough*Sonic R*cough*), yet I find myself going back to them again and again, for another go. Why? The inexplicable reason for this is dealt with in why sonic?, so I won't elaborate. I have owned 2 Sega consoles (a Sega Multimega - called CDX in the USA, and a Sega Dreamcast, my current console). While the death of Sega as a hardware manufacturer has sounded the death knell of Sonic games on Sega consoles, I'm sure that our favourite blue hedgehog will continue to leave speed trails on everyone's monitors and TV screens for a long time to come.
