| This is a photograph of the Vanderkloof Dam (built in 1967). This dam is 108 meters high, and is thus the highest dam in South Africa. It is also the second largest. The dam holds back the Oranje river, which is very warm and quite nice to swim in. Below the dam are many many fish, one of which I caught bare handed. The fish I caught was a mud eater about 18 inches long. This is about as large as they get because the catfish tend to eat them by the time they get this size. On this side of the dam (at the bottom) are catfish big enough to eat an adult human. Divers refuse to do maintenance to the dam without a shark cage for protection. |
