hale-bopp

This is a photo of Comet Hale-Bopp taken just before sunrise from east of Colorado Springs. The blue portion of the tail is dust, and the blue color comes from light being scattered and reflected by the dust. The red portion of the tail is ionized gas giving off light. Picture taken in 1998 I think.
