Traditional
Shan dance depicting girls picking tea leaves. The Shans live in the
northeast of Myanmar in Shan State, which occupies a quarter of the
country's land mass. Unlike the Burmese which inhabits the fertile lowlands
irrigated by the Ayeyarwaddy river, the Shans prefer to live a simple
lifestyle in the remote hills and mountains of Shan State.
Taunggyi, the capital of Shan State is a popular hill resort while Inle Lake, with its floating garden and leg-rowing fishermen, are premier tourist attractions.
