Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI)

Background

1.    Children under 5 years of age account for more than 50% of the global gap in mortality between the poorest and richest quantiles of the world's population.

2.    More than 50% of all child deaths are due to just five communicable diseases, which are preventable and can be treated: pneumonia, diarrhoea, measles, malaria and malnutrition.

3.    IMCI is a broad strategy to improve child health outcomes developed by WHO and UNICEF.

4.    IMCI encompasses intervention at home, in the community and in the health system with the aim to reduce childhood deaths, illnesses and disability and to improve children's growth and development.

Questions

1.    What are the problems encountered in the interview?

2.    How useful is the collected data for future interventions?

3.    How long does it take to train health workers to implement IMCI and what are the skills they need to acquire?

4.    How is IMCI being implemented in the field setting and what constitutes a satisfactory outcome?
