The End of an Empire

The empire of Austria-Hungary lasted for 51 years. It was destroyed in 1918, at the end of World War I. Austria-Hungary and Germany were defeated by the Allies, a group of countries led by the United States and Great Britain.
The terms of the peace plan imposed on Austria-Hungary by the Allies after the war were serve. Under this plan, Hungary was separated from Austria, and more then two third of its territory was given to surrounding countries. Thus, millions of Hungarians suddenly found themselves separated from their native land and living in several neighboring countries.
The new, shrunken Hungary was a small and weak state. In the years after World War I, it experienced many political and economical problems.
