The Long Road to Reform

In the late 1960s, Kádár cautiously began to make some changes, or reforms. He allowed limited private ownership of property. Some Hungarian farmers were allowed to grow crops for private sale. And some businesses were allowed to operate for private profit.
Gradually, living conditions in Hungary improved. There were more goods for to buy and more money for people to spend. Many Hungarians soon began to push for greeter freedoms, including the right to form political parties. But it wasn't until 1989 that Hungarians were finally free to run their own economy and government.
