The Arrival of the Magyars

The region was finally invaded by people who would stay - the Magyars. Modern Hungarians are direct descendants of the Magyars, the people Prince Árpád led about 1,100 years ago.
After they had settled down, the Magyars were eager to expand their territory. They launched fierce attacks into lands as far away as Italy and Germany.
In A.D.955, the Magyars was defeated at a decisive battle in Germany. As a result, they gave up hopes of further conquest. They contented themselves instead with the land that is now Hungary.
The inhabitants of western Europe were terrified of the Magyars, because they thought they were related to the dreaded Huns. They were wrong. As a result of this association, however, the Magyars acquired a new name: the Hungarians. Prince Árpád's descendants ruled the Hungarians for the next 300 years. During this time - in the late 900s - the people accepted the Christian religion. In the year 1000, King Stephen was crowned as the first Christian king of Hungary.
