Map of Hungary
Hungary is located in central Europe. It is bordered by seven small nations: Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria.
The broad Danube River divides Hungary down the middle. To the east of the river lies a vast flat area called the Great Hungarian Plain, or the Great Alföld. To the west are the regions of Transdanubia and the Little Alföld. Western Hungary has some hilly areas, as does the northern part of the country, where the Màtra Mountains border on Slovakia. But Hungary is mainly flat. Its highest point, Mount Kékes,is only 3,300feet (1,014 meters) above sea level.
Hungary's Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in central Europe. Extending 45 miles (72 kilometers) in length,Balaton is shallow, perfect for boating, fishing and swimming. Hungary has a temperate climate. In the winter, temperatures may fall below freezing and there is much snow and dampness. In the summer, though, the weather turns warm.
