HARRY CHOATES
THE CLASSICAL CAJUN & CAJUN MUSICIAN

Harry Choates
Born December 26, 1922, Died, July 17, 1951

Born in Rayne, Louisiana and grew up around the Lake Arthur area.
He was called "Parain De La Mlsique Cajun"
"The Godfather of Cajun Music"

"JOLIE BLONDE"

"Jolie Blonde" made famous in the late 1940's by Harry Choates

"Eh ye' yaille chere, "Mais Jolie Blonde".
Here is something for your history of "Jolie Blonde" "Harry Choates was the Cajun musician who had the hit record of "Jolie Blonde" and started the Cajun Music going in the 1940s. He died in jail in the town of Austin, Texas. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, in Port Arthur, Texas I don't think I know one Cajun that does not like this song. It is often called the "Cajun National Anthem". I think almost every Cajun Musician has played this song at one time or another.

Following information was sent to me by:
JJ Deshotels "A TEXAS CAJUN FROM VILLE PLATTE."
He is buried about 2 blocks from his house.
(JJ took these pictures and sent to me.)

He also wrote,
"I was going over your page as I do very often and when I got to the pictures of the tomb stones of Harry Choat, I don't think I told you the story of why there are two of them, their was a disk jockey by the name of Gordon Baxter who was a friend to Harry and he thought that he should have a better tomb stone, so he put on a collection drive for one and raised the money for the new tomb stone. Gordon is retired now close to his Eighties(1999) and lives around Beaumont, Texas.
I thought you might be interested in this little tid bit."
Thank You, JJ
