My idea of a helpful starting point

Factual Article:
Your boss wants a press release praising Colonial Plantation houses, Martha Stewart or low-fat cheesecakes, lovely.

Write an outline:
7 negative aspects of your topic.
Then write a rebuttal, 1 paragraph for each.
These goods can become the body of your piece.

MY BUDDY DARKWING'S NONFICTION TIPS

his techniques are crazy big helps

ONE

Begin with an interesting fact/twist/quote.
Intrigue or startle readers.
Give them something a little odd...a little surprising.

Example:
"In Havana, the calendar may change, but every year is 1955."
Be descriptive, but doublecheck that the intro ties into the article's subject.

TWO

Use lots of quotes. Don't say something yourself when your source has already done it for you.

THREE

Be concise. Get to the point, *especially* the lead paragraph.

FOUR

Blend in some fiction writing techniques (especially in features.) Use descriptive words that people don't expect. Describe how your source said something (laugh or frown?). If the location where you interviewed your source is pertinent to the story, toss in a little bit of setting.

Don't wander or go off on tangents.
As we say in advertising, make the product the hero!
