"Spread Sunshine All Over The Place"

Another day came and went on Saturday. A day much like any other day. A day when the sun came up, the birds sang, then the sun went down. The strange and haunting thing is that this never happens in Yahoo Alley. Sure, the days pass, but the days aren't like normal days in the alley. Is the sun up, or is it down? No one seems to know for sure. When I arrived it was mid-afternoon. The sky was overcast and the air was cold. It had been snowing earlier, but I was bundled up nice and cozy. Soon Kenny, Alan Mitchell and Orla strolled into the alley and greeted me with "good evening". Strange, I thought, all of them not knowing it was really afternoon. And why isn't it as overcast over them as it is over me? Happy came in wearing an outfit better suited for the beach than a cold alley. "Hi all, just finishing lunch" she said from under the brightest stream of sunlight I had seen since my years at UCLA. Soon Kareyn stumbled into the alley in complete darkness. "Good morning", she yawned still in her pajamas, "sun won't be up for another hour or so". By the time everybody had arrived the alley took on a strange look. Sun shining in one corner, it was snowing in another. One cat was cold, a dog was too hot. As one group slipped into darkness, another became brighter. I guess that's one of the things I love about the alley. No matter how dark and cold you get, you can always find a ray of sunshine in the alley. There is always at least one bright spot and it seems whoever has it is willing to share.

So it was in the alley today. Kennel, proud new papa that he is, brought along Dogcat_baby his new pride and joy. Her mommy stayed home to wash diapers and dad brought the kid to taste her first Ryder. Taste it she did with a remarkable 3-0 record for the day. Not bad for someone less than 1 week old. The good will inspired by the sight of the new addition spread throughout the alley even to the extent of having JamesGreyWolf play for the cats this week (after a suitable display of disgust at the thought). Possibly with the hope of cashing in on all the good will, Orla announced that she and partner Acastofmany were planning on 2 slams today (too bad kid - nobody was feeling generous, I guess). The highlight of good will came late in the match. The match was neck and neck. Tied at 11 at the beginning of the third round. Polly called from the fire escape "Who's undefeated so far?". As this reporter posted a list of those who were, Macmarine said "not us, we lost the first round big time". OOPS, I made a mistake? How could this be? Impossible you say, and you have every right to think so. Alas, it was possible. I had made a mistake back in 1954 (but there was some considerations not taken into account then). I checked back, re-checked, then asked "Mr Honesty" if he was sure. What a shocker - it was true. Sunny_OR and Pob had been the big victors in the round and I gave it to Mac and Lorraine instead. I quickly made an adjustment to the score as Polly snuck down from the fire escape to leave before her dog friends figured out she had let the "cat out of the bag". Poor Polly. She left before she found out her beloved dogs had come back to win the day 24 - 20.

Even JamesGreyWolf was happy that his regular team of dogs won the day. He was happy that he had, in a way, contributed to the victory by only winning one of his matches. Once again, sunshine was found in the alley.

My cameraman successfully captured some of the cats on film. He is working on the dogs now. To see the latest results of his efforts with the cats, click here.
