Food For Thought

Thought For Food

Consider this:

At present rates of global (largely US) oil consumption, it is estimated that the planet's oil supply will begin dwindling within the next twenty years, with a corresponding increase in oil prices.

This sequence of events could be accelerated by the population increases and the industrialization of developing and underdeveloped countries. The dependence on oil as a resource is one of the factors contributing to hostility towards the Middle East, where most of the world's oil reserves are located.

The energy crisis and escalation of East-West conflict could be averted by a speedy transition to alternative energy such as wind power, solar power and geothermal energy, and the use of methanol-based fuel for automobiles.

These questions are also pertinent:

 - how will jet planes (military and domestic) be fuelled in an oil-less future?

- will microwave energy be used to heat turbines for generating electricity?

- will the increased use of coal contribute to emissions that accelerate global warming?
