A small explanation
This conference arose out of a programme of animal
conferences that we have been organising at the School of Oriental and African
Studies in London for the past 20 years, latterly under the rubric of the Interdisciplinary
Animal Studies Initiative @ SOAS.
Nobody talks about shit. So we decided to talk about
shit. We gathered an international panel of speakers, and it was a wonderful
weekend.
Originally, for reasons of decency and decorum, we titled
the conference “Merde Alors!”. From now
on we are reverting to the Anglo-Saxon.
The files posted on this website are the articles as they
will appear in the eventual printed book. The site is a work in progress. The
articles will be posted here as the editing work is completed, and they will be
available for public downloading.
We are planning to do a second conference in the coming
