PREFACE

The SOAS Donkey [and Mule] Conference is an international conference established by Ed Emery and William Clarence-Smith at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. It operates as part of our Interdiciplinary Animal Studies Initiative [IASI]. To date there have been four conferences.

The first conference was held on the Island of Hydra, Greece, where land transportation is done mostly by mules and donkeys.

We have gathered papers from the conferences, and they are published here as a record of our work – and also as an encouragement to work that may be done in the future.

First published in 2024
