Physical Skills
Elves always use their bodies. They're almost always in motion. Their Physical skills will reflect which things they do best, and which they can't do without falling on their face. Some 'other' skills fall between Physical and Mental, and almost all Survival skills are also "physical" in nature.
Climb The ability to take handholds and food holds, and get off the ground somehow without using a magical power. Elves who have a strong Climb score can scale a sheer cliff wall, a tree with branches almost too high to reach, or rough crumbly terrains. Poor climbers should stick to the flatlands. Every time an elf climbs even the most familiar terrain, they might need to check this ability -- what if it's rained recently and they don't know about that loose stone? There is a branch about to break, will they get to another in time?
Dance This skill is very useful, as well as fun. At Howls and festivals, or privately, this skill allows the elf to use their body and clothing or props, to evoke a response in their audience. Or, just to dance around having fun. The best dancers are always called upon to perform before the biggest audiences.
Dodge This skill is very useful when trying to avoid getting hit by something, be it a beast's hoof, a claw, or another elf's attack. It is simply the art of getting the heck out of the way. It also works for falling objects like branches, stones or hail, or trying to get across a moving object (like wet stones on a river).
Jump This skill is used when the elf is trying to get from one area to the next, and there's nothing to hold onto in between. Down from a ledge, up to a branch, across a stream. Usually but not always, those elves with even just a tiny bit of Levitation magic can do this far better than others who don't have any. This skill can also help keep the elf alive if something starts to fall out from below them, like a weak bridge.
Manipulate This is the skill used by weavers, artists, anyone who works with their fingers. To make a small item of jewlery, pottery, a weapon, or other such thing in general Manipulation is there for it. Each specific skill might be found below, but for those who don't specialize in something, this is the skill for it. People with high Manipulation often fidget with their fingers.
Ride Used by any elf to ride their bond animal if it's big enough, but also if they don't have one, to select a mount and stay on it successfully. If they can, they can also try to get the beast to go where they want it to... Sometimes this is just 'hanging on for dear life' but most elves are really quite good at this skill.
Swim The ability to remain in water and not drown. Some elves are so good at this, and have Water shaping magic, that they stay in their river or lake or the ocean full time. Most just take a dip now and again, or go fishing. But it's helpful when the river overflows its banks, or there is a flash flood, or someone just pushes the elf in that pond. Strong swimmers can maintain in a stiff current, choppy water, or very cold waters. Some elves can't float well enough to swim, so this is one skill they might not have.
Tanning No, this isn't "getting a sun tan", it's the ability to work animal skins into leather and furs for clothing or shelter. In reality it's a very ugly, messy job. In the Otherforest it's no exception. Taking the skin off something to begin with is gross. Making sure it comes off in one nice piece takes work! Stretching, cleaning, softening and even coloring the hides takes a lot of time and effort, this isn't something an elf can just pick up in an afternoon. Sometimes it takes years to get it right! The best tanners are called upon to make the Holt's clothing, or repair them. They create sturdy, functional clothing and even some armor.
Throw This skill is good for tossing stones, sacks from one person to another, and hitting things at a distance. It can also be used to throw a frizbee around too, they've made those. It is easy to throw something that is made for it (like a well-balanced knife, or a spear) but other people can use this skill to throw the most unlikely things (people? Animals?) and actually hit what they were aiming at.
Trapping The art of designing, building or weaving a trap to catch something in. Some elves use only this skill when hunting, as it keeps them in very little danger -- unless they happen upon the animal and it's still alive! This skill covers everything from making a simple noose, to a big pit trap covered in vines and lined with sharp sticks. Both have their uses!
Weaving This skill is a specific manipulation of thread or yarn or other materials (reeds, hair) to make something bigger. Either clothing (most often) or rugs, mats, baskets, etc. Nearly anyone can be taught to weave reeds into a basket or a mat, but this skill covers their ability to plan color-threads, make looms and use them right, turn animal fur or fluff or hair into thread and then into cloth, and in fact, they are also used as tailors in most cases. There are a couple elves who have the specific Tailor skill but they rely upon the Weavers to make the cloth they use. The best weavers and tailors create brilliant works out of silk, plant fibers and such, and usually are asked to make clothing that is not used while hunting.
Other Physical Skills
Art Many elves have an artistic talent. This crosses over into Physical skills, but artistic expression can also be said to be a mental skill. More about it in the Physical skill section.
Brewing That's right, the ability to make ale, wine, beer and liquor. Some Holts have contests for their yearly brew-masters! Some folks prefer a mild tasting grape wine, while others like to work with concoctions that would make the heaviest drinker pale. Each area of the world has certain kinds of fruits and grains that go into the variety of drinks elves make.
Farming This is the act of cultivating plants without the Plant shape magic power. Digging in the dirt is a favorite past time for many elves, but nearly all of them have some form of magic for it. However it also helps to be able to sense the natural means. This is a more physical extention of the Plant Lore skill. It helps determine where to plant, how many crops can be grown in one area at once, and when to harvest, or when to cover their plants from frost, or irrigate the area. Anyone can pick a fruit off a tree. Farmers plant the trees and make sure the fruit is healthy!
Map Making Cartography is an important skill to only a few elves. Most elves never leave their home Holt, once they've gotten there. But there are those who are interested in nothing more than seeing the entire world plotted out on a piece of paper. This skill allows them to accurately put down in a scale drawing where they are, and where something else is in relation to them. Making small notations like landmarks, showing an accurate river curve, or the edge of the coastline, all are important details. Also, they can help map out areas of migration, plot travel courses and the like.
Music/Singing This pair of skills does not always go into the same person. Some elves who can sing can't play a guitar to save their lives. Some drummers should NEVER sing. Either way, this skill is used by elves in a social situation to provide musical background or just get funky. Elves often commemorate events or joinings by singing or making a new piece of music to dance to. Each elf might specify a particular instrument, like reed flute, guitar, harp, drums or whatnot.
Tinkering Understanding the nature of a mechanical object is one thing, but being able to construct one is entirely different! This skill allows an elf to produce toys, devices, or other mechanical things which require more than a couple parts. Sometimes using a bit of magic power to aid this skill is needed, but more often than not the tinker elf will make things with loving care. Whittling, carving and attaching things with wire, strings, metal bars... If they are in proximity to the Ice Traders they might have access to finely made and tooled parts!
Weaponsmith/Armory Even an elf with strong metal shaping powers won't know what to make without this skill. With it, however, a piece of metal can be turned into a deadly sword, a piece of bone into a beautiful bow, a simple stone into a handy gutting knife, a fish rib into a perfect sewing needle. This skill is used to create mostly weapons, though some use it to fashion armor for those elves who might live in a dangerous territory (fighting each other is very uncommon, but they might have to fight other creatures, or even need it from the animals they hunt!). Every weapon needs to be made for the specific person it's going to be used by. Too heavy and the elf might not be able to pull the bow string properly; too long and the sword can't be swing right.
More skills can be created. Skills which require almost purely physical work qualify under this type. |
