The first time I had ever come across his work was in only in Yr11. Mrs Smith, our English teacher, wanted us to read Maestro, which turned out to  be the best novel I have ever read in my life. Every image was vividly descibed. Every stir of emotion was effectively conveyed. We were moved to tears. We shared the highs and lows--joy and sadness, the success and failure, the innocence of childhood and the disatisfaction of medicocrity, the sympathy-- the mood throughout the entire novel. It was an excellent work with a unique style. No one can do better.

His most recent novel, Three Dog Night(2003), helped me to look beyond my disappointment in my performance in the English HSC exam. It was a novel with a deep insight into human relationships. There were times of joy and horror-the book was a greate accomplishment. An all enveloping experience in reading it.
