About Mandy:
Hello!  I am from Helena, Montana, and I am in my third year at Montana State University, majoring in English Teaching with a minor in Reading (k-12).  I am a Resident Advisor in Hapner Hall, which is one of the most difficult jobs in the world, but I love it and have learned so much!  I love to read (if you hadn't figured that out), snowboard, rock climb, and do just about anything else outside.  I am, I admit, a bit of a geek...Lord of the Rings and The Matrix are two of my favorite things that often come up in school and life discussions.  I am always up for an adventure, and strongly believe that Life is about having fun, and opportunities to learn and grow are everywhere all of the time.

Teaching Philosophy:
I believe that teaching is more than just books, desks, memorization, and test-taking.  In order for teaching to be memorable beyond the test, it needs to be interactive, fun, and personalized.  I believe stronly in the power of a classroom that is busy, noisy, and full of activity.  I will use a lot of journaling and creative writing projects because I believe strongly that education needs to be about more than just gaining knowledge about the world around them, but about developing and nurturing an strong, healthy sense of self and personal power.  I want to make experiencing literature and reading enjoyable, interesting, and worthwhile through exciting projects and discussions.  My biggest goal is for students to discover how much fun reading truly is, and that it can be better than movies or video games if they just give it a chance to come alive.

Honestly, what kid doesn't have outer space on the brain?  This page uses real NASA things to teach a variety of different spacey lessons for the classroom.  Not only are they exciting and fun, but educational as well.
This is the Acceptable Use Policy for Montana State University's resnet system.  It is very important to know this information so that the user is familiar with guidelines and doesn't do something potentially stupid and job/school threatening.
Here is an example of an Acceptable Use Policy that is actually implemented in a Montana School District.  It is the one I had to sign in High School.  Like the one for MSU, it dictates proper use guidelines for school computers so that the user understands the internet guidelines before going online.
Interested in "talking" with other teachers about issues, struggles, and teaching ideas?  Teachers.net has a message board for just about any content area--it's good to know you have some support out there!
This website has some useful information about developing student collaboration. There are some helpful examples here, too.

Technology Ideas:
One thing I would definitely do with my highschool English students would be to have them build web pages using the same process I used in order to build this one in order to display the work they have done, and learn valuable web skills.  I did this in my highschool Honors English class and really enjoyed it.  Click Here to view the page I made.
I would also do a journalism unit and have my students create their own newspaper.  In order to do this, they would need to have knowledge in using programs like Adobe Pagemaker and Photoshop.  They would be responsible for writing and editing their articles, doing layout, and adding pictures with captions to their articles.
