Chapter Seven

Karen sighed as she watched Meghan put her hair up in a bun. I wish I were going to Homecoming.
Theres still time, Kar-stores havent close yet. We could go get you a dress, Meghan said. Come on.
Karen shook her head. No, Id just be a third wheel. Im not really in the party mood right now anyway.
Are you sure? Meghan asked as she put earrings on.
Positive. Youre going to have so much fun tonight, Meg, Karen said.
Meghan snorted. Yeah right. Jon, Melissa, Brenda and Shane are going to make this night hell for me. Theyve had it in for me ever since I made the varsity team
Theyve always had it in for you, Karen said.
Yeah, but now they really hate me, Meghan replied as the doorbell rang. Oh no! Hes early! Whats he doing here early?
Meg, calm down. Make him wait a little-it makes the effect even better, Karen advised as Meghan put on the last of her makeup and slid her glasses on. Dont you have any contacts?
Yeah, but theres no time now, Meghan said, slipping her shoes on.
You look really good, Meg.
Thanks.
Have fun tonight, okay? Dont let those losers bring you down, Karen said.
Meghan nodded. Yeah, okay. See you later, Kar.

Oh look, here she comes, Mrs. Johnson said to Justin with a smile.
Justin focused his attention on the stairs that Meghan was carefully descending. His eyes grew wide and his voice came out as a squeak. Her shimmery dress clung to her body as if it were made just for her.
Meghan smiled. Hey Justin.
Hey Megs, Justin managed to get out. He held out a bouquet of wild flowers. These are for you.
Thanks, Meghan said. Mom, can you put these in water, please?
Of course, honey. You two go and have a good time, okay? Remember to be home by twelve-thirty, Mrs. Johnson said.
Justin smiled. Ill be sure to get her home by then, Mrs. Johnson.
Okay, bye you two.
Bye, Mom.
Bye, Mrs. Johnson.
Meghan and Justin walked outside to his car and he opened the door for her.
Thank you, Meghan said politely.
Justin smiled as he turned on the car. Megs, you look really pretty tonight.
I dont look pretty any other time? Meghan asked with a teasing smile.
No, youre pretty all the time, but tonight youre especially pretty, Justin replied.
Thanks. You look pretty good tonight too, Meghan said shyly.
Thank you. Everyone is going to be staring at you tonight, Justin said.
I hope not, Meghan replied with a laugh. I dont like being stared at.
I dont like you being stared at either, Justin agreed. But its going to be hard to avoid.
I know Jon and Melissa and all the others are going to ruin my dress or do something to me tonight, Meghan said.
No, Megs, they wont.
How do you know that?
I know because if they do, someones gonna pay.
Justin, no, dont do anything like that, Meghan said.
Megs, if they hurt you in any way, Im gonna have to.
