The Juliana Theory, Glassjaw and Piebald
Friday June 21st, 2002- Five Points Music Hall: Birmingham, AL
So this was the last Glassjaw show we saw on the Juliana Theory Tour.  The day started off with a trip to Psycho Tattoo with Melina so that she could get her tattoo finished. The guy who was working on her was named Soul, and Melina said that last time he was really quiet and didnt say much. But yesterday he talked practically the entire time, and gave us his life story. He started later than we thought he would, so it took longer for him to finish. When he did it was already like 3:15. So we motored on over to Janelle's. Cory was already there, so after getting directions, we hopped into Corys car and left. Getting out of Atlanta was a bitch and it took forever. When we got to Birmingham, I guess it was a little after six. The place the show was at was called Five Points Music Hall. There weren't that many people in line so that was good. As we were walking, we heard someone screaming Janelle's name. It was Billy (shun). So she stopped to talk to him, and the rest of us went to the back of the line. Richie and Cris later came to say hi while we were standing in line, and a few minutes after Brad and Jodie showed up. They started letting people in around 6:45, but once we were inside, we just stood in this little waiting area. Shun were already in there when we got in there and they were acting so silly.  Janelle was talking with them while Cory, Melina and I stood in line waiting to be let out onto the floor.  Billy walked by us in line and gave me this funny look and I laughed. So I went over to talk to him.  I gave him a hug and he said, You didnt come and say hi to me outside. And I said, Oooh, Im sorry.  Then we just talked for a little bit before I went back in line.  After being inside for about 30 minutes, they finally let people go out onto the floor.  And of course everyone ran to the front. I was just gonna stay on the far right side, but then Melina got a spot right in front of Todds mic.  So I stood next to her. There were people in front of us, which kind of bugged me.  But they ended up leaving the front and so Melina and I got right up against the railing.  Piebald played first as they had done in Atlanta and Charlotte.  This time around, I was actually getting into them.  Theyre music is really catchy and it seems as though theyve grown on me.  Theres this one song called American Hearts, that goes, HEY! Youre part of it!  YEAH! Youre part of it!  It stays in your head and you cant help but sing along to it.  Next was Glassjaw and wow they were so awesome. Daryl spent a lot of time on our side of the stage so that was pretty cool. They played Tip Your Bartender, Pretty Lush, When One Eight Becomes Two Zeros, Piano, Ape Dos Mil, Must've Run All Day, Siberian Kiss, Motel of the White Locust, Two Tabs of Mescaline, and Trailer Park Jesus. No Ry Ry's song like Melina and I wanted. Dammit! But they totally kicked ass and were just going off.  Beck kicked a monitor or something during their set and one of the guys that worked there was mad and jumped down off stage and got in front of Beck to yell at him. Then after the song, Daryl said that it was rude for the guy to do that since the band was still on stage and that if he had a problem, he needed to talk to their tour manager. The guy then flicked Daryl off and everyone started booing at him. The funny thing is that Daryl was trying to be nice about the whole thing, but the guy was still pissed.  Someone also lost their wallet and Daryl delayed a song to ask who it belonged to.  They ended with Two Tabs of Mescaline which Im really starting to love a lot.
After their set we just wandered around the venue looking for Janelle. I went into the main lobby area and saw Billy and I poked him in the stomach as he was walking by, then he grabbed me and started tickling me. Haha. Then he said, "If I leave before i see you, goodbye." I asked him if he knew where Janelle was and he said no. But we found her eventually with Jodie and Brad. Then Cory Melina and I then went back to the merchandise tables so that she could get a shirt, and she complained that it was too long. Hehe. She's gonna get her mom to make it shorter. I suppose it is kind of a long shirt for her. Then we couldn't find Janelle again, so we just went outside and there she was. We all walked to the back where the buses were cause dammit i was gonna meet Daryl this time if it killed me. The moment we got out there, Todd came off the bus and he was really nice and talked to us for awhile. I told him about how we had gone to Tallahassee 2 days before only to learn that they werent really playing that night. Then Janelle started talking to him about Wheat thins and Nickelback and Todd just stood there and was totally into the conversation. I got another picture with him. He's so laid back and really easy to BS with.  Dave came along not to much afterwards and he said that he remembered me from the other shows, so that was cool.  I also told him about how we had driven down to tallahassee. He said that Piebald had actually gone back to Boston to do a show.  And he said that they spent their two days off in Orlando and they went to a water park.  Then I asked him where Daryl was and he said that he was taking a shower and that I could pop in on him if I wanted. Haha. yeah right. Then Daryl came to the bus, and went on it, and came back a few minuets later.  I was standing right there, so I gave him a copy of that String Quartet Tribute to The Cure that I love so much.  I was nervous because there were kind of a lot of people waiting for him, and so they all saw me give it to him.  But he liked it.  "Wow, thank you very much."  He went back on the bus to leave it there, because he and the guys were going to get something to eat.  So their manager said that they were going to eat but that they'd be back.  Jodie wanted Chinese take out, and she was going to go to this place up the street.  But when we walked over there, Glassjaw were inside, and so they really didnt want to go in there since Glassjaw was in there.  After Glassjaw left Jodie and Brad got their food.  Melina and Cory went over to Subway where Larry was. They talked to him and said that he was really nice. Glassjaw went back to the bus with their food and so we just waited there until they came out. There weren't that many people at all waiting for them so that was good. I guess some kids had gotten tired of waiting.  I was really glad that Janelle and Melina were cool with us staying until we got to meet Daryl.  When Daryl came out everyone there went up to him.   Cory and I just waited for Daryl. When he was pretty much done signing and taking pictures with everyone else, Cory went up to him and shook his hand.  He told him that they played a great show.  Then he said, I dont mean to sound cheesy, but your music has really helped me out through some tough times. And Daryl said, Naw man, me too.   Then I asked Daryl to sign Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence.  As he was signing it, he was kinda leaning close to me and I noticed he was looking at my band pins on my bag.  The pins on my bag are of The Cure, New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees, stuff in that vein.  Then he said, "You listen to the same music as I do, that's cool." Then he said, "Thank you so much for the cd sweetheart, I'm going to listen to it on the bus." and I was like, "SCORE!" I hope he likes it. Then I got a picture with him, and I pray I didn't look stupid. Then I took a picture of him with Cory. As he was walking away he said, "Thanks again for the cd sweetheart." ROCK. He called me sweetheart TWICE! Haha. Yeah I'm a nerd.  But I couldnt help it.  It was Daryl fucking Palumbo, and I was just happy that I got as many words out of my mouth as I did.   Daryl then walked to Brad, and Jodie and Janelle and got pictures with them.  He was so adorable.  Now I have a crush on him again, especially since he called me sweetheart.  So my mission was complete. I got to meet Daryl and give him the cd and get a picture. For some reason I was really nervous talking to him, but it was so easy talking to Todd and Dave.  I dont know why. I guess I just think so highly of Daryl because hes written lyrics that have just really gotten to me.   I just hope he didnt think I was a complete idiot.  But after I finished talking to him I felt so relieved, accomplished and fucking content as all hell. After we all talked to Daryl he went back on the bus, and we decided to leave.  A fucking incredible night!  Now I love Glassjaw even more. Who wouldve thought that was actually possible!
