Nothingface, Vision of Disorder, and Dog Fashion Disco
Friday, July 6th, 2001- Masquerade: Atlanta, GA
Melina and I werent going to go to this show at first.  We had thought about it, but decided to chuck the idea. But when Friday afternoon rolled around, Melina found herself bored with nothing to do.  And so she called me up and asked me if I wanted to go to the show.  I wasnt doing anything so I told her sure.  She picked me up and we went downtown.  We parked over at the Kroger parking lot, as usual, hopped over the railing and went down the hill towards the Masquerade.  As we were walking, we saw this guy talking on the phone.  He had some laminated passes around his neck.  Melina said that he looked like the lead singer from V.O.D.  Indeed he did.  When we walked inside we saw that there werent too many people there.  While standing around, this black girl came up to me and asked me if I was at the Smashing Pumpkins signing last year. I told her that I was.  She looked familiar to me as well.  Then I realized who she was.   And we talked for a little bit.  She seems like a nice girl.  The first band to go on was Dog Fashion Disco.  I had heard about them from Janelle who is a fan, but I had never heard their music.  When they came out, I figured theyd be an interesting band to watch. The lead singer was wearing an Elvis jump suit, and he had on a black wig.  The rest of the band was wearing blue button down shirts with ties, and gray slacks.  The second they started playing, Melina and I both realized that they sounded a lot like System of a Down, who we would later find out is one of their influences.  For their whole set the lights were down low, and the stage was very dark, so you couldnt really see any of their faces.  And while some people jeered at them, the lead singer was quick to shoot back at all of their insults.  He was very comical while performing, which only enhanced their set for me. I thought they were really good.  After DFD came VOD.  When the lead singer came out, we saw that he was indeed the guy that we had seen outside talking on the phone.  Melina started to snap a few pictures.   Now cameras are not allowed at the masquerade, but Ive taken many pictures there, mostly with musicians.  But I think the club has a problem with pictures being taken when a band is performing.  This really mean security guard took the camera that Melina had and put it in his pocket. We were afraid that would happen.  We had some pictures on it from the Poison the Well show a few days before, so we really wanted it back.  Later the guy told Melina that he would give it back to her when she left.  Anyway, V.O.D didnt play a lot of old stuff much to the disappointment of Melina, but they did play Element and Imprint, two of their really good songs.  Their set had a lot of energy so it was cool to watch them play.  After VOD, we decided to leave because we really didnt care to see Nothingface.  So we told the mean ass security guard that we were going, and he gave Melina the camera back.  It was a good show.  Something fun to do on a boring Friday night.
