silverchair and Lit
Wednesday March 10th, 1999- The Roxy: Atlanta, GA
After missing one of my favorite bands in the world play about 5 times before, I finally got to see silverchair play at the Roxy here in Atlanta, on Wednesday, March 10.  As Im sure all chair fans know, the bands first U.S. show was played here in Atlanta at the Roxy, and so of course they have a lot of love for this fine city.  But anyway, where should I start. HmmmWell, 99x is the local alternative radio station here and before the concert Ben, Chris, and Daniel were at the studio answering questions from people calling in.  I was at home listening to the radio.  The weird thing was that the people calling in either wanted something else or they wouldn't turn down their radio so that there wasn't feedback. It was just a mess.  This one girl called in and she kinda just wanted to say hi to them and all, and you could tell that she was nervous.  She also seemed kinda shocked that they were actually there and she was talking to them.  I wanted to go down to the studio so badly so that I could meet them and get their autographs and everything, but my ride was late picking me up because HE was down at the studio getting their autographs!  When he finally did come, he apologized for being late and said that if he hadnt gone to the studio first, he wouldnt have gotten to meet them.  I totally understand because if I had been in his place I would have done the same thing.  When we arrived at the Roxy, the opening band, Lit was already on stage.  Theyre from California I believe.  They were really awesome. They had a lot of energy and got the crowd really warmed up for silverchair.  The only song that I knew by them was My Own Worst Enemy, (from the album A Place In The Sun) and so I was glad that they played it.  When Lit left the stage, I was able to get a little closer to the front.  The Roxy isnt a big venue and so even the back was a decent place to watch the show from.  It didnt take very long for the crew to set up for silverchair, which made me happy cause I was so ready to see them play.  When everything was set, the lights went down and everyone started screaming.  The band walked out on stage and plunged right into Slave. I decided that it would be cool to write down the set list, even though I probably could have gotten it from one of the security guards.  I wanted to see how many of the new songs I could figure out.  Anyway, Slave was just awesome and that really got the night off to a good start.  Daniel was wearing a ball chain necklace, a silvery shirt ( I think the one from the Anthem video, but Im not sure since Ive only seen the video once, when I was pretty much out of it) and gray pants.  Chris was wearing these bright orange pants, white sneakers and I dont remember what color his shirt was, maybe black or something.  And of course Ben was shirtless.  The next song they played was Pure Massacre.  That was such an awesome song to hear live.  The crowd obeyed when Daniel sang Put your hands in the air, and there was lots of crowd surfing too.  Next was Abuse Me and I think thats the song when Daniel got everyone to jump up and down when he was singing, Throw the sailors overboard.  The next song they played for our Listening pleasure, was Emotion Sickness.  The crowd loved it.  Then they played Israels Son and that was one of the songs were there was a lot of moshing and crowd surfing.  The drums and bass were just incredible on that song, so props to Ben and Chris . Everyone was jumping up and down when Daniel sang I am I am Israels son, Israels son I am. It was very cool.  The second new song they played was Anas Song (Open Fire) and Daniels voice on that was just amazing.  Immediately after that they went into Suicidal Dream which is one of my favorites from Frogstomp.  Paint Pastel Princess and Madman followed, both really kick ass songs to hear live.  Then Chris and Ben walked off stage and left Daniel there to play alone.  I thought that he was going to play Cemetery and so I was surprised when he started playing the first few chords of Tomorrow.  He dedicated it to everyone that came to rock.  Ben and Chris came back on stage and they played Miss You Love. That was such a pretty song.  The Door followed and then my fav from Frogstomp, Faultline.  Freak came after that, in which Daniel got the crowd to sing, Body and soul, Im a freak, Im a freak. It sounded way cool.  They had played 14 songs before plunging into Anthem for the Year 2000.  That was just the coolest because they had all those weird sounds converging through the speakers before Daniel started singing, We are the youth!  He just kept saying that over and over again, and he pointed to us in the crowd and we repeated after him.  It sounded awesome echoing through the room.  After we had sung We are the youth! a few times, Daniel finished the line and sang, Well take your fascism away and continued on from there.  That song was just so incredible so its no surprise that the crowd was dying for more after the band left the stage when they finished Anthem.  After chanting Sil-ver-chair!  Sil-ver-chair! a few times and screaming, the band came back on again and played two more songs. The first was Satin Sheets which I was really eager to hear since I had heard that the fans responded really well to it.  There was no exception here.  It got everyone in the place either jumping, moshing, or surfing.  And I was dreading the moment, but the last song they played was No Association which is probably my favorite song from Freak Show.  I was hoping that they would play it and so you can imagine that I was really happy when they did. The drums were so good on that song. Everyone was jumping up and down and bobbing their heads and really getting into it.  And that was it.  The band left the stage for good, the lights came back up, and everyone started leaving.  I really hated to go.  I wish they could have played 17 more songs but I know that theyre only human and they can only go for so long.  It was still a really awesome show.  Through the course of the show, Daniel changed guitars a few times and he interacted very well with us, in the audience. He also kinda danced a little which was really cool, because it looked like he was having fun.  He talked to us a lot and said that we were a really awesome crowd.  And he also joked about our Olympic games.  He said something to the affect of, You had the Olympic games here, right?  Well yours sucked!  Sydneys is going to be so much better than  yours!  Then he smiled and said that he actually didnt even watch the Olympics and so he didnt know if they sucked on not and he really didnt care.  He also told people not to throw clothes up on stage because they already had enough.  Why do people do that anyway? I never understood that.  It was so awesome actually watching Ben and Chris play live because theyre so energetic and they really get into the songs.  It really makes us fans feel so good that theyre playing so fervently for us.  I know it makes me appreciate them even more and want to give them even more praise and adulation, which they deserve anyway.
