[minus], Fold, and Skerv
Saturday January 6th, 2001- The Masquerade: Atlanta, GA
This was the second time I saw [minus].  I had just gotten back from New York where I spent Christmas vacation with my family. While I had been in New York, I talked to Jordan a couple of times online.  I told him that I was really excited about seeing them again, and that I was eager to pick up the CD.  Melina and I went to the show together of course. I don't know what time we arrived, but some weird band was on stage. There weren't a lot of people there.  Jeremy came out to meet us, handed us backstage passes, and we followed him into the backstage area of the Masquerade.  Now I know Im a nerd for even saying this, but I was so excited to go backstage at the Masquerade.  Just thinking about all of the other people who had been back there before got me all excited; Slipknot, Ultraspank, Will Haven, Soulfly, Type O Negative.  When we walked up the stairs and into the backroom, we almost immediately came into contact with Dusty, who plays guitar for [minus].  He was eating popcorn and offered Melina and I some.  "You want some?" he asked while extending the bag out to me. "Sure, " I said, and I grabbed a few pops.  Then Melina and I sat down in some chairs, away from the other people in the room.  The room was to say the least, unkempt and messy.  Not that I was expecting a lot, it was just, strange.  The couches and chairs were sinking and full of holes, the walls and doors had been written on.  Actually I think one of the cabinet doors was off its hinges, lying on the floor.  There was one section of the floor that had an X taped on it and a sign that read, "do not step here."  It looked like it was sinking as well and if you stepped on it, you would drop right through the floor.  Oh nice.  There was a CD player on the table and I think it was playing Kid A.  People were walking in and out but I remember seeing Matt, Gianni, Gianni's girlfriend,  Jfold, Rachael, Cole and Dru.  There was this one guy Josh, who had on a Bob Marley shirt, and Melina knew him from high school.  Matt was taping people with his video camera and I believe Rachael was setting up her camera to take pictures.  I remember her talking about all of the concerts she had been to where she took pictures.  Jfold was voicing concerns about breaking one of his guitar strings.  Jeremy was busy doing tech stuff, and was in and out of the room.  Once when he came back into the room, he was wondering why Melina and I weren't talking to anyone else.  We couldn't, we didn't know them like that, and we didn't know what to say to them really. And while I tend to get shy around people, Melina gets double shy, and so if I don't say anything, she surely won't.  Well that's how it is in most cases anyway.  Oh well.  After sitting there for a little bit, like 10 minutes, Jordan walked in. He saw Melina and I right away because we were close to the door.  I was sitting down, so he reached down to give me a hug and told me it was nice to finally meet me.  He shook Melina's hand and said it was good to see her again (they had met at a Fold show when I was in New York).  Jordan went to sit down with his buddies.  He grabbed Matt's camera and started filming stuff.  He was filming Jeremy when Jeremy said, "Hey, film her!," pointing to Melina.  Jeremy did this, 'cause he knew Melina would hate it, which she did.  She tried to hide her face from the camera, but I tried to pull her hands away from her face. Then Jordan said to me, "Well is there anything you'd like to say to the camera?" and I said, "Uh, minus rocks! Is that good?"  Most of the time while were back stage, Skerv was on stage playing so we didn't get to see them. But after they played, Fold was next so we went out front to see them.  Anyway, there weren't many of us out there for Fold, maybe 10 or 15 and that's pushing it.  But Fold was awesome and I had fun standing next to Jeremy and Melina. It was just like the Deftones show at the Ballroom except none of us were on the floor, and Jeremy wasn't screaming bloody murder.  [minus] of course went on last.  With Matt, Lee and Dusty onstage everyone was waiting for Jordan who was taking his sweet time getting his butt on stage.  Dusty asked, "Does anyone know where our singer is?  Does anyone want to fill in for him?" and Dru screamed "I will!"  But Jordan eventually swaggered onstage wearing a fur coat.  He looked all pimped out. But he went on to perform wonderfully.  I didn't know any of their songs at this time, but Hesitant and Polite really stood out in my mind.  Jordan dedicated it to Gianni, whose father was ill and Dru went up on stage to sing Jonah's (Far) part.  Dusty also brought two girls onstage to sing "I am intention. Intention is effortless," which is the other part that Jonah sings.  The whole song really made an impression on me, and I LOVED it!  [minus] of course played a great set.  When they were done, Melina and I bought their 7 song EP, Elevator onsale that night for only $5.  I was really happy that I finally got it because I couldnt wait to listen to all the songs.  We also wanted to get Fold's 3 song EP. So we asked Jeremy if he could get someone to get them for us.  He went backstage and later came back with 2 CDs, free. We thanked him, told him to thank the Fold guys for us, and gave him a hug.  Then we left and figured it was a pretty good night.
