| Juliana Hatfield & Good Friday Experiment: Friday September 27th, 2002- Caledonia Lounge: Athens, GA | |||||
| She palyed "Spin the Bottle"! Yes its true. Juliana palyed "spin the bottle" ! Yay! I love that song. It's on the Reality Bites soundtrack by the way, and she actually did that song with her former band The Juliana Hatfield 3. Anyways, so yeah i decided to go to the show after much debate in my head. After class, i was really tired and feeling kinda sick, so i was thinking about just staying in. Then i talked to seth and was telling him how the first song i learned on guitar was a juliana hatfield song, and he said for that reason alone i should go. So i did, and it was awesome! I got to the Caladonia Lounge at 9 and the show started at 9:30. There was one opening band and they were called Good Friday Experiment. I don't know how to describe them really. Not what I expected. They all looked like a bunch of hippies, except for the drummer. The drummer looked lost. Not to mention he's a student at the Meg White school for Drumming. Unfortunately, he hasn't gotten too far in his textbook either. Currenetly he's reading the chapter directly after the one entitled "So you want to be a drummer?" The singer looked like an emo Moses, if that makes any sense. Haha. They had this guy who played the keyboard and the organ, and he was making all of these really cool distortion sounds, that i thought was the guitar, but it wasnt. It was weird. At first I thought that they would sound like dredg or something, but i don't know what they sounded like. They kind of had weird dredg-esque lyrics, but the organ made me think of the doors at times, and i dunno. It wasn't bad though. I actually enjoyed their set. Although, every song was like 5 minutes long. They only played for 30 minutes though. When they finished Juliana was up. By the time she got on stage, the small room was pretty full (its about the size of the somber reptile) It was SOOO werid seeing her up on stage. If i had seen her when i was 15, i would've flipped out. She actually looks younger in person, which i didnt think was possible, because she has this baby face. And her arms were SOOO long. Haha. I noticed that too. Anyway it was just her and the guitar and wow she was so awesome. She was talking to the small crowd and making jokes. She was saying how she liked Caladonia better than the 40 watt, which apparently she's played several times before. She was also saying how she couldn't get a hotel room because all of them are booked because of the football game tomorrow. So she's gonna have to go to atlanta tonight (where she's playing a show tomorrow) and get a hotel room there. I totally got that same feeling, like whenever i see one line drawing. Just wanting to stand there and watch. A person up onstage with just their voice and their guitar is so much more powerful than a huge production for show. Her voice just carried through the room. She's has this really great voice. It's very high and clear, and you can hear everything she says down to the last syllable. About 3/4ths into her set is when she played "Spin the Bottle" and i was just like "NO FUCKING WAY!" I had totally forgotten about that song. I figured she might play "Universal Heartbeat" or "Make it Home" but not "Spin the Bottle." That was the highlight for me. haha. I was looking at her fingers on the frets while she was playing and she was just all over the place. Everytime I try to play that song, I can't because the changes are so quick. Maybe I should try to play it the way she plays it. Some other songs she played were "Your Eyes", "Ten Foot Pole", "My Protegee", "My Sister", "Somebody is Waiting for Me" and "As If Your Life Depended On It." Juliana's set ended about 4 to midnight. Everyone pretty much left immediately except for myself and like 4 other people. When they were done talking to her, i just had to go up to her and say something. So I thanked her for playing, and told her about how i missed all of those cotton club shows she played because i was too young to get in. So she said that she was happy that i could finally come and see her play. Then i told her that "make it home" was the first song i learned to play, and she said that she had forgotten about that song, and hasn't played it in a while. Then she said that when she was just starting to play guitar, she learned a bunch of R.E.M. songs and that she'd be so amazed that she could play something that this really awesome band was playing. It made her realize that they just weren't these magical people with special powers who could do things no one else could do. She could play these songs too. She's such a sweetheart, and still seems a little shy and reserved. But I'm happy that i got to talk to her. ACK! It's JULIANA HATFIELD. haha. I'm a nerd, but i didn't think i'd have that much fun. So i said goodbye to Juliana and made my way back home. i was able to catch a Russell Hall bus. It had to stop at Russell/Brumby first of course, and it picked up a shitload of kids who were going downtown. Every single one of those kids was fucking drunk off their asses. They were being loud, and yelling, and swinging from the handles at the top. I was like, "What the hell" i was more than happy to get off at my stop. If there was ever a reason not to drink, it was those 50+ drunk 17,18 and 19 year olds on the bus. |
