Melina and I left Athens around 4:45, and got to Columbia around 8. There were lots of kids at the Brookland Tavern already, which made us kind of nervous. I saw Zach (the lead singer of Vendetta Red) in the back alley (he sticks out 'cause of his hair ya know) and i said to Melina "hey there goes your boyfriend" ''cause he was like all in her face at the 40 Watt show. Doors opened at 8:30 and they let everyone with tickets in first. We were just hoping that we would get in before it sold out or something. But no worries, we got in just fine. Found a good spot next to the speakers on the right side of the stage, behind this one girl and guy. Vendetta Red went on first. Now their set wasn't as explosive as last time, but they still sounded great. AND, Zach was cracking jokes left and right. He was also shooting back at hecklers and was very witty with his comments. I think he's attended the Dog Fashion Disco school of heckling. Some emo/hardcore kid yelled "Cut your hair!" and Zach yelled back, "hey why don't you cut your hair? Come up here right now and we'll shave your head." Then he said, "Loser, come up here when you get a band." Ha. Then Zach and one of the guitar players were commenting on how the lights were making their black shirts look purple. And then Zach says THE FUNNIEST thing in the most "sad, pathetic, emo" voice. He said, "I wear black on the outside, because that's how I feel on the inside." I almost died right there. That was just the funniest thing in the world to me. Then him and the other guys were saying that between the five of them, they could sleep with all the guys in the room in like 15 minutes. Then he said something about how sucking dick was fun and....yeah. Weird boys. Zach didn't move around as much this time, but he didn't have that much room to anyways. However, as they ended their last song, everyone just went nuts, and the guitar player on the left ended up on the ground shaking and jerking his body all of over. It was great. I should've gotten their cd, but i didn't have enough money. Hopefully I can find it online somewhere. During their set though, Bert came up to the front and stood right between Melina and me and was rocking out. It's cool that he comes out to watch them. Next band to play was Stretch Armstrong. And i guess all the kids were mostly there to see them. When they started, i was reminded as to why I don't like hardcore shows anymore. Ya know how it goes. Yeah. Lots of pushing, and people grabbing on to your shirt, and using your shoulders to push off of when they jump up in the air. Not fun. I was counting the seconds until they got off of stage. Not because I didn't like them, just because everyone around me was being annoying and hardcore. haha. Stretch finished their set, and mostly everyone left and went outside. Once the people in front of us moved, we were able to get right up against the stage, right in front of where greg and jeph would be. Got there at 8 and were still able to get as close as possible. AWESOME. So the Used went on, and by the time they were onstage, people had come back in from outside, so they had a good sized crowd watching them. Melina and I just went off. Screaming our heads off and jumping around and going nuts. It felt so awesome to do that again, because it's been so long since I've done that. They played the same set that they had played in Athens. But this time around, it seemed even shorter, so i was mad disappointed when they finished. It felt like they were only onstage for like 10 minutes. Boo. They sounded SOO good though, and Melina and I were both happy that we decided to go to the show. So after the Used, we got out out of the front and went by the merch table. Melina had gotten a bottle of water from Branden and she finished it and threw it away. Then this black dude who was nearby, and had his arm in a sling, said "oh do you guys want some more water? hold on, stay right here." So he like, goes over to the bar and gets us two cups of water. We didn't know what to say, 'cause that was kinda weird, and he was an older guy (late 20s, early 30s maybe) and we were like, "uh, does he like want something from us now?" haha. So we just told him thank you and finished the waters. As i was eating the ice, he noticed that our water was finished, so he went back to the bar and got us more water. Took our empty cups, and gave us full ones. Now melina and i were really weirded out, so we decided to go to the back room where the equipment was. We put the water on the table and decided not to drink it, 'cause we didn't know if the guy had maybe put something in them. Haha. ya never know. We ended up pouring the water down the sink. Wasn't all that thirsty after the first cup anyways. So we're standing in this back room, and melina's waiting to go into the bathroom which is inside this room. These two guys come up to us and are like "hey we saw you two on the highway." and we were like "huh?" and they were like "yeah, we saw you on the highway and then we saw you at that gas station up the street." Then i remembered that before we went to the venue, we had stopped at the gas station to pee, and these two guys and this girl went into the gas station too, and Melina said that they looked like they'd be in stretch armstrong or something. Turns out they were from atlanta and had seen the show at the 40 watt. They were there for A. Dub though. Anyway, these two guys introduced themselves, and they were Andy and Jason from Whippersnapper, this local atlanta band. Jason said that they play shows in atlanta and athens a lot, and the name did sound familiar to me. They said that they opened for Less Than Jake when they were in town last so that's pretty cool...if you like Less thank Jake. Anyway, Andy kept talking about how he had seen us on the road and that we were "talking really fast." And he was like "wow those girls are talking really fast." haha. That's probably when we were singing along to the used or something. I later found out that Jason is the guitar player and Andy is the singer. They seemed like nice enough boys though. If we have their cd at the station, which they say we do, i might be inclined to play it now. Melina thought Jason was kinda cute. She thought he kind of looked like Chris Carrabba, but i thought he looked like the lead singer of A New Found Glory. I think i was right. After talking to those guys, they went back to the stage area, and Melina and I stayed in the back room. We were going to go, but I wanted to get one of Bert's braclets first. So we were waiting in this back room, looking through the back door to see if Bert was going to come off the camper. As we were standing there, A. Dub's band started coming in, and then Andrew walked in, in his dirty white jeans and dirty white t-shirt. He was getting ready to be announced i guess, so he was just kinda standing there. This kid came up to him and said "Hey man. I just wanted to ask if I could get up on stage with you. Would that be cool?" and Andrew said, "yeah man. Do whatever you want. As long as you have a good time." What an awesome guy. I think we should make Andrew a saint. Hehe. They announced Andrew, and he went onstage, and the room was packed again, and the kids started rocking out. They were really getting into in, and having fun, but it was NOTHING like the Athens show. We didn't watch his whole set, but no kids got up on stage or anything. Probably wasn't enough room. So i was still waiting to talk to Bert, So i looked outside to see if he was there yet, and he was talking to some kds. So melina and I went outside, and when he was done talking to those kids, he came over to me, and shook my hand. Told him that we had an awesome time at the show. Then asked if he would trade bracelets with me. Now he has black and pink jellies, so i figured he'd take my purple or blues ones. He was gonna take my black jellies, but then he saw my bracelets with the cool pastel beads, and he said, "oh what do those say?" so i said. "well this one says 'sad girls por vida.' This one says, 'I <3 pharrell, but you don't want that one." and then he said, "no, thats the one I want." and i was like "really?" and he said, "yeah, that guy's awesome." haha. So thats the one he took, and he gave me two of his black jellies. Then he had to go cause their camper was pulling away so he said goodbye. It cracked me the hell up that he took my "i <3 pharrell" bracelet though. Especially if he's going to wear it, 'cause people are gonna be like huh? Haha.We left after that, and got back to athens around 3:30. Definitely a good show. |
