Brand New and An Early November- Saturday May 3rd, 2003:
40 Watt: Athens, GA
So after a week of nerves and waiting, the day of the Brand New show arrived. And of course I woke up way too early this morning, and of course my stomach was doing flip flops all day, and I couldn't even stomach anything until like 3, and by then even though I was really hungry, I couldnt even finish my whole sandwich. I don't know why I'm such a nerd. It's totally a mental thing. I should've just been like, it's Brand New, no big deal. But it is a big deal, and I do like them a lot, and hell I didn't even know who I would be interviewing until i got down there. So I got down to the 40 watt at around 4:30. Found some guy who was on the tour and asked him if there was a manager or something for brand new that i could talk to because I was supposed to interview them. So he went and found the guy, and said that he'd be out in 10 minutes. So their tour manager came out and told me that he'd send them out after they finished soundcheck. Around 5:30, Jesse came out and introduced himself and shook my hand. We went into the van to do the interview which rocked (air conditioning!). The whole thing went really well. He's a great interview! He totally answers questions very well. I said, "so...." and "ummm" way too much, haha, but I think I did ok for it being my first interview with a band person. I listened to the interview a few more times since then, and I think it turned out well. So i asked him questions for like 30 minutes. If i get the urge to type it up, I will, and i'll post it for anyone who might want to see it.

After the interview, i told him thanks, and headed back to the dorm. Called my dad, and then called Ariel. She was on her way back to Athens, from Atlanta, so she said she'd call me when she got to town. When she got into Athens, She picked me up, and we went over to her house and hung out for a bit. I forgot how much fun Ariel is. I'm definitely hanging out with her more next year. I let her listen to some of the interview, and she thought my Morrissey/Smiths question was really good. And we talked about boys and school, and fun stuff and it was really awesome. We didn't end up going down to the 40 watt until like after 9 i think. Got in with no problems so that was good. When we arrived, The Fight and A Static Lullaby had already played, which was cool, 'cause there was only one more band before brand new. They were called An Early November, and to me, they were kind of boring. Nothing really that special. But then Brand New came out and they rocked it. Vinnie is so funny, and Jesse is so rock and roll. It was great! Ariel had to leave early to go to a party, so when she did, I just went up front and sang along with the rest of the kids. They actually opened with Jude Law and a Semester Abroad which i thought was weird, 'cause most bands don't usually open with the single. They also played The Shower Scene, Last Chance to Lose Your Keys, Magazines, Logan to Government Center, Failure By Design, Mix Tape, Secondary, Guernica (a new song), and of course Seventy Times Seven. When they were getting ready to play Soco Amaretto Lime, everyone but Jesse left the stage, and he dedicated the song to John Nolan (of TBS) and said that he was his best friend, which I thought was cute. Apparently there's something going on with TBS, there have been rumors about a break up going around, and someone being in rehab? I dunno. I'm sure we'll learn more in the coming days and weeks. So yeah, Brand New rocked it. Ariel and I gushed over how cute Vinnie is (haha. we're such girls). They ended around 11:30, and I would've loved to have stayed to chat or whatever, but man i was so tired and hungry. I mean i haven't slept or eaten well in like a week, haha. And now i'm tired and hungry. So i just decided to leave. Besides, I got to meet Jesse and talk to him, and so that was good enough for me. He's way nice, very very cool.
